Nations Battle Report 1 Part 1 - Background - Updated - 23.01.2024

 Hi Everyone,

Nations Battle Report No. 1 Part One - The Background to the conflict.

This is my first outing on here of Nations, my home made battleground. It is the year, BE.2571. It takes place on the continent of Bjantffas, the home of the Btjantff Empire, mainly controlled by the Elves, with a smattering of other races around the edges. The area had recently been devastated by volcanic eruption to the south, The central capital, Nitan, Grey with a red dot) has been built in an extinct volcanic crater. It has been devastated by a Dragon taking up residence in its main living area.

The Continent of Bjantffas.

Note: Smaller Island nations not shown on this map.

Capital  Nitan 21,100 (40,000 gp). - Ruled by a science council, backed by landowners. A main City Guard. Two main routes in and out of the capital, Nitan`s Might the north east pass and Nitan`s Protection, a tunnel dug in to the extinct volcano to the south. Roads and villages nestle in the foothills.

Latest News - A dragon has awoke and moved into Nitan and has wrecked most of the major buildings. The nobility, followed by the rest of the able bodied population have fled f the capital, heading west, leaving assorted treasures behind them. The roads are clogged, panic is rife. They are easy prey for bandits, or former guards who see the opportunity to go rogue in the chaos.  The remains are being picked over by thieves. Food stores have been ransacked, intact supplies would be buried among the ruins.

Council leaders - Socrel Lelius (Elf) Trade Guild, Wenda Hardeholme (Dwarf) Mine and bank Owner, Eldran Torsund -Gem Dealer, all survived an assassination attack,  Argyle Hoonfest- Army Commander, Grag Tern -Navy Commander. Advisors FOL, Tymorae, Gaia, Druid. They plan to set up a base of operations on the coast.

Former Accomodation - Battle of Atris Bay Tavern and Hotel.   Howling Bear traders,  The Sentry Officers College - destroyed, The Red Banner Traders Guild - wrecked. The Black Spider Queen Inn -Destroyed.  The Full Warehouse Pub. Nitan’s Arms.

The Army HQ and Admiralty - Destroyed above ground, but who is in the secret bunker - tasked to the rebuilding of the Capital if disaster ever came?.  The Heralds Court - Destroyed. Guild Row - Destroyed. The Famed Mage Tower - Destroyed.  What was let loose to roam the ruins? The basement Vault contained some book copies from the Great Library at 7 Towers,  in the Country of Achin, to the West. Anything else ?. Nitan Bank - Destroyed - Partially emptied.

The Great Library of Nitan survived, so far, being mostly underground. Science College-Destroyed. The Followers Of Light Temple (Which was being repaired, then destroyed again in the earthquake and now has a Dragon sitting on it). Hanvers Palace-Destroyed. Tymorae‘s Chapel - Destroyed, but with its gold vault un-looted, as yet.  The Druid Grove was turned to ashes. Gaia Hall survived the initial chaos, because it was small and insignificant. The Indoor Market survived. The Lower Science College survived. The Abandoned Gold Mine - Very big, it connects to a large cave and lava tube system. It is quite full with peasants and others, who may be richer, but most were lost and starved to death or captured by its dark cruel, residents. I wonder who else has been disturbed in there?

The Stone Circle Teleport had been the scene of bloody conflict, surrounded by clerics and wizards trying to get out. Some got sent to random, forgotten, locations as they rushed their spells, without adequate supplies for what lay at the other places.

Most of the Ruling Council of Nine were killed by assassins among their own Guard. Bandits attacked the refugees, who were fleeing mainly to the west along the main Northern exit. The southern tunnel through the mountain intersected a cave system and way down to the Underdark. During the disaster and the lack of food, the guard posts watching over the exit were deserted and the Goblin tribes are making the most of it.

They have ransacked villages for slaves and prowl the ruins of the capital for treasure. Some of the national guard from the Red Sector, where the Southern Tunnel emerges among Nitan's Fingers, have been tracking one of the goblin bands that have been rampaging across the countryside.

The Battleground

I am using a homebrew rules mix of Rally Round the King by Two Hour Wargames. For their latest games check out their website. I am on turn five at the moment.

The western shoreline of Lake Nitan's Tears will be our battleground.

Regards,

Ivor Cogdell

P.S. 18 May 2022 - Yes, this is still taking place, I'm halfway through the project, but was not sure if it was the right mood at the moment with what is actually going on in Ukraine.

P.P.S. 6 September - Just having another go at it. Work and holidays got in the way. Working out what went on in turn five was a bit of a nightmare since I was so rusty, I still have a couple of elements to work on.

I mislaid my photos, but will keep looking

Thoughts On - The Third Edition of 5 Parsecs from Home Pt1 - Updated 28 Dec 2021.

 Hi Everybody,

Here I am again with another large gap between episodes. My gaming has lapsed for a while, for assorted reason, mainly job searching and getting fitter, not fantastically so, but I am walking better than I was. I have been watching youtube vlogs on the topic of roleplaying games and following the volcanoes in Iceland (eruption finished, but maybe a new surge or Lava flow underground), La Palma (Just finished) and Mt. Etna (Smoking).

I have an old wargame episode still in the works. The pictures are on and I am editing in the text now. I am about to shoot another quick battle using "Rally round the King" fantasy rules by Two Hour Wargames or possibly Warhammer fantasy battles (Similar to Mordheim). Its the first time that I have actually used it in anger, so I am not sure how much detail to include with it so that it does not get bogged down explaining the rules. My terrain and figures are on the table as I type. I am hoping for a weekend shoot, after I fix my flat tyre on my bike.

As you can see from the title, Ivan Sorensen has combined with Modipus to put out a hardback annual book of the Third Edition rules of Five Parsecs from home. I have not checked out the price. It has been available for a few months now, but I have only just become aware of it. There are reviews and playtests on youtube that you can watch to see if it is your sort of bash about.

There is at least one expansion pack available, as of the 3rd December 2021.

Five-Parsecs-From-Home--Expansion-1--Trailblazers-Toolkit

Have you played this latest version ? What are your thoughts ?

I have the second edition of Five Parsecs, as you may know. So, that would my next sci-fi go to when I have got some more models and terrain painted. Not sure what timeline that will be though, being honest. I hope you enjoyed my last WH 40K outing.

That's about it for today. Stay safe. Fingers crossed that COP 26 is a success, otherwise, you can start dusting off those post-Apocalypse rules to get some early life change tips.......Greta T could have a point, "We want less words and more action, people. When the government starts offering free swimming lesions, BEWARE".

The Battle for Dirk's Compound - Part 5

The Battle for Dirk's Compound - Part 5 - All on edge.

Previously
Pt 1 The cast.
Pt 2 - Pre game Info, House rules.
Pt 3 - Mission Briefing
Pt 4 - The scrap starts.

Hi all,
A bit more to my battle. It would have been more, but I banged my foot and could not put any weight on it, so moving around the board was a non starter. Here is what I had left over from the other day to keep you going.

Turn 3

Activation (PEF Rep 6 NW)
Roll 1 successes - Move towards Rep5, at minimum range so stays still.

Activation (PEF Rep 5 - Middle)
Roll 1 successes - Move 8” towards enemy through cover. (Checked when he broke cover, Hank was looking the other way).

Activation (PEF Rep 2 - Right)
Roll 1 successes - Move 16” towards enemy through cover. (Checked when he broke cover, Hank was looking the other way and still raining cats and dogs).

Activation  - SA
Major Vance gets cover behind some cargo. Wanda moves right to cover the lake and Landing Pad. Andy comes out of the Habitation module. Vicky moves forward and left on the catwalk. I checked her movement inch by inch and both forces were still in cover, although it would have been close at times, if not for the storm going on. Thumper waits at the corner.

Turn 4
Activation  - SA = 15, O = 4.  - SA  go first.
Turn 4
Major Vance checks out the Cargo. Hank moves forward. Thumper moves towards the ruined wall. Andy covers the water.

Suddenly Wanda’s voice comes over the Com. ”Contact ! Contact ! I have movement at the end of the road.”

Vicky “I have Negative contact, repeat Negative contact. It was the trees swaying in the storm casting shadows, Wanda. In this storm you can hardly see past the end of your arm.”

Major Vance - “Hank, move up to the left gantry and watch with Vicky, stay alert and observe.”

An ork looks down the road
"Can't we go down that nice flat road?"

"You just want to keep your boots clean so you don't have to polish them tonight."

"So.... is that a yes ?"

"No, get back in line. and for asking dumb questions you are on cook duties as well."

The Orks to activate next.....

Sorry it was just a short post. I put together what I had from before, minus the stuff that was not applicable  due to the first contact that did not count due to the weather. I left it in so you could see where it was originally going to happen.

Regards all,

Ivor Cogdell

The Battle for Dirk's Compound - Part.1 - The Cast (Updated)

5150 Star Army Rules - The Battle for Dirk's Compound

The Cast

Hi everyone,
Here is the cast of my latest war game in preperation -The Battle for Dirk's Compound, using the 5150 Star Army Rules (C) by Two Hour Wargames. My figures are partially from Games Workshop (C) Orks and "Rebel Trooper" type Space Marines. They are about to get rather angry with one another over some disputed real estate. You know how touchy these green fellows can be. One has to merely mention that their maiden aunt had a face like a wizened pickle and they hit the roof, even if it was true. Well, especially if it was true.

The Rebel forces.

The Boss-"Teddy Boy" - Assault Rifle, "Spike the Nutter" - Assault Rifle and "Spike Junior" - Plasma Gun.

"Sweet Blondie"- Assault Rifle with molecular Blade and "Spring Boots" Jump 8', "Snotty the Standard Bearer" - Medic and "Toot the Smoker"-  Second in command. - Flame thrower.

"George the Knuckles"- Power Glove with "Mack the Knife" Assault Rifle and Molecular Blade.

Roll Call for the Star Army

"Major Vance “Bullseye” Popov" Laser Pistol and Molecular saw, . Sgt. Hank “The Tank” McDougal Assault rifle, and Pvt. Andy “Red Top” Jones - Power Glove and pistol.

Pvt. Vicky “Sureshot” Hodges - Assault Rifle,  Pvt. Charles “Thumper” Wiggins - Power Glove and Pvt. Wanda “Magic” York - Assault rifle.

If reinforcements enter the fray, their info will be shown at the time.

The Character Stats and first Campaign Turn is to follow next.

Coming soon

Coming soon to a Blog near you

Hi all,
Just a quick note to let you in on my next mini wargames treat. I am going to try out the Two Hour Wargames (C) 5150 Star Army skirmish Solo rules, using Games Workshop (C) Warhammer 40K "Rogue Trooper" Space Marines and Orks as opponents. There are assorted alien types to square off against, with different styles of attacks. It comes with a built in terrain generator, so you get unique games every time.

Why not use the 40k rules? There are no solo rules in there, and there are in 5150 Star Army. Most, if not all Two hour wargames are specifically designed for solo play in mind. Being Solo rules, there should be more of a surprise element in it for me, which is good.

Features

They use markers for the approaching enemy forces location, which may or not be ghosts. You do not know until actual contact with them. There is are assorted mission types, Patrol, Attack, Defend, vehicle and building rules. It has a campaign element in it as well, which should be fun.

I have finished the Ork and Star Army Marine Roll Call, just got to convert some of the weapons and check for damage done. Photos of the participants coming soon. I am still pondering the size of table to use, though.

Catch you later, stay safe,

Ivor Cogdell
