Hello Everyone,

I am doing a Character upgrade from Version One to Edition Three of Five Parsecs from Home by Nordic Weasel Games. Ivan Sorensen still does a blog for his work. I have pasted the original stats here and then modify as I roll.

Every star is an opportunity supplement.
Version 2 of Five Parsecs From Home is available from Nordic Weasel Games.

"Five Parsecs From Home Third Edition" and two supplements are available from  https://www.modiphius.net/en-us/collections/all/five-parsecs-from-home_all-products

My Five Parsecs From Home Campaign

Characters

Captain Martin Taggart

Background - He was brought up by Brent Farlane, the First Officer on The Rising Tide, a deep-space survey vessel after his parents were killed in a gravity sledge accident. His first job was in the Laundry, which at first he thought was pure drudgery, but it built up his muscles and he could see the benefits of it. He was later helped by a buddy who had a cargo haulier, The Big Fist. He was able to sign on with him and learn the trade from the inside, what to do and not to do. He found out that the cook was smuggling diamonds via some of the food crates. He spent most of the reward buying The Magic Carpet. He likes the spacer way of life.

Petty Criminal - He has bent the law on occasion to earn enough credits to get by. So long as no one gets hurt, he is willing to be flexible with the law when it suits him. Now he has his own ship he is trying to tread a straight path.

(House Rule - Reinstate 1st Edition rule - When arriving on a planet Petty Criminals get free roll on Trade Table. Also knows one Criminal NPC, not a patron).

Motivation - Political. He is sick of the corruption in the world. He wants to help the little man.

Character Class - Starship Crew.

Medical Record

He has been caught up in assorted skirmishes, which taught him how to take care of himself and his friends. He likes to go hunting alien life forms, not that he gets much chance to do so.

Motivation - Glory.  He believes in a supreme being that is out there somewhere, laughing at the rest of us.

Character Class - Nomad.

Rocker - He wears his hair short and plays oldie rock music loudly in his cabin, soundproofed naturally.

Medical Record
Reactions = 1    Speed = 4   Combat = 1    Tough = 3    Savvy = 0    Experience =4.0   Luck = 0

True Believer - A true fanatic with a cause, "we are in the right, so don't mess with us".
If a Bail result is applied against this figure, immediately move 6” towards the nearest enemy and attempt to initiate a Brawl.

Weapon - Hand Cannon. - Range = 8. Shots = 2. Damage = 1. Notes - Pistol.

Rose "Spike" Sharpe (Pilot) - 2nd in Command
Alien Screand

Background -She is from Purgalis, an isolationist planet. A member of the wealthy Sharpe family, merchants who transport Unity gear about the systems. She is a survivalist and wants to make her own way in life. She was arrested for underage flying, but Daddy's money made the charge go away. She is a very good pilot. She has not seen any of her family for three years.

Scoundrel - She has falsified information about rivals in the past, to get where she is now, just to make sure the job would be hers. She likes to keep an eye on what other pilots in the area are doing. Planting rumours here and there, nothing specific or anything that could be traced back to her. She has a contact in the control tower who feeds her any interesting information he comes across.

Motivation - Loyalty. She wants to make up for her past deeds by being loyal to this new crew.

Character Class - Scavenger.

Medical Record
Reactions = 1    Speed = 4   Combat = 0    Tough = 3    Savvy = 0    Experience =0   Luck = 0
Current Status - Fit for Duty.

Weapon - Hand Gun. - Range = 12". Shots = 1. Damage = 0. Notes - Pistol.

Ted "Cracker" Greene (Tech expert)
Alien Orakkg

Background - It is from the continent of Tremis on the planet Craagie, which has been classed as a Primitive level. It is currently in the "Wanderlust " stage of its development. It is another of the Blue Bandana Tech Guild graduates. It uses a variety of Martial Arts to keep fit. It fell out with the rest of its family, who do not work, sitting about playing holo games.

Motivation - Truth.  It believes that Order is the way forward for mankind and that things, in general, are getting worse rather than better.

Character Class - Soldier.

Medical Record
Reactions = 1    Speed = 4   Combat = 1    Tough = 4    Savvy = 0    Experience =3.5   Luck = 0
It was refused permission to Bond with a female because it had poor prospects for advancement. It aims to prove them wrong on that point.
Current Status -  Wounded right arm - Light duties. (It is not suffering from any shock for killing another being - It sees it as bringing Order to mankind, weeding out the defective units.)

Traits

Primitive - The old ways were best. It likes dishing out justice personally. It took a personal survival course, living off the bush with no modern technology, it passed with no problems.  It collects old ceremonial knives for the cabin wall.

Terrifying - Roll a Shock die against each enemy when approaching within 4”.

Peculiar habits (Loud Singing) - No game effects but can be uncomfortable for the rest of the crew. Extra soundproofing has been requested for his quarters.

Weapon - Engraved Blast Rifle - Range = 16". Shots = 1. Damage = 1. Notes -
Weapon - Blade. Range = Brawl  Damage = 0.  Notes - Melee.

Lucy Ronin (Nurse)

Background - She comes from the overcrowded planet of Mastrect. It also holds Isolationist views. She grew up in the gang wars that plagued the planet. She was trained in the 4078th M.A.S.H unit. She saved a patient's life by giving her a dose of an expensive drug intended for a rich senator. (The hospital had to get another dose for the Senator). She was sacked for Gross Misconduct. The unions fought her case and she won ("Treat everyone equally") and with her compensation money, she bought a ticket off-planet.
Motivated by what she had missed out on in her earlier life, wanting a slice of adventure, she came to the frontier planets.

Working class - Has done quite a few jobs. Has a wide skill set.

Motivation - Fame. She wants her deeds to be known across the planets. She is keeping a diary that she is sure one day will become a best-selling book.

Character Class - Ganger. Scythe tattoo on her left arm. Three drops of blood dripped from the blade.

Medical Service -   Unity Mobile Base (Mastrect 4078) - 2 years service.
Dishonourable Discharge - Gross misconduct (Not Guilty). Damages Awarded - Credits 50.

Medical Record
Reactions = 2    Speed = 4   Combat = 0    Tough = 3    Savvy = 0    Experience =0.5   Luck = 0
Current Status - Fit for Duty.
Traits

Stalker - No one is sure where this breed came from. Likely a mutation or military experiment, Stalkers have spread throughout the Fringes. They have dark blue, crimson or purple skin tones with gleaming, unnatural eyes.
On any event roll of a 6, the Stalker may teleport to another location within 3”. This does not prevent its normal activation.

People Skills - One other figure in the group may ignore 1 Shock die result per game.

Lack of initiative -
If more than 4” away from friendly figures, she may not move except to seek cover. She will only fire if an enemy is within 12” or if returning fire.

Counter Attack - If attacked in Brawl, may re-roll dice roll. She has been taking martial arts lessons from Ted, she is a natural at it.

Weapon - Blast Pistol - Range = 8". Shots = 1. Damage = 1. Notes - Pistol.
Weapon - Hand Lazer. - Range = 12. Shots = 1. Damage = 0. Notes - Snap Shot, Pistol.

First Contact

They all met on a rainy evening in a starport bar, "The Light Show", on the planet Hugemont. They were taking part in the regular quiz night. They won, celebrated and realized that they all got on well together. Martin saw an opportunity since he needed a crew and they were all looking for work, so they decided to see how things worked out by doing a contract together on the Magic Carpet.

See also - Reginald "Pinky" Farnsworth.

The Magic Carpet is an alien vessel that the Used Transport dealer thought was haunted, so he was willing to sell it at a knockdown price just to get rid of it. It was a troop transport in a former alien war. In fact, the ghost was the ship's Artificial Intelligence malfunctioning and producing a holo-image of itself, it is now repaired and called Melody.

See also - The Magic Carpet information.

Droids 834 and 811.

Droid 834 has now been fitted with an upgraded memory and operating system, plus override commands from Melody. Droid 834 is now doing light maintenance tasks, getting to know the ship operations.

Droid 811 is being worked on by Pinky in his spare time.

5P - Thoughts On - The Third Edition of 5 Parsecs from Home Pt2, plus Mindjammer

 Hi Everybody,

The first article on this subject was typed in December 2021, a while back now. The reason for revisiting the topic is that I have finally bought a copy of the third edition in hardback from my local gaming store, Weyland's Forge. Here is their  Facebook Page, in Birmingham UK. As a bonus, I found some mercenary and Goblin figures. They have loads of books and board games to choose from. Brushes and paints for models too.

You can find a breakdown of the book https://hws3.wordpress.com/2022/11/22/review-five-parsecs-from-home-3rd-edition/  on Andy Slack's gaming blog. I have only had one read through so far, so I am not sure of what they have left out of the early versions of Five Parsecs. I have the "Salvage Jobs" expansion, plus "Another Star" world creation kit and the Play Aids 0.12, but I have not checked to see if they are compatible with Edition 3. It may be possible that "Starport Scum" has been added to it in some form or another.

I have joined the "Five Parsecs Fans" Facebook page. I do not know if there is a conversion sheet for the different versions. There was a small part from converting two to three in the book. There are now two expansion packs on the Modiphious Entertainment webpage. I will add a link later.

The next day - I was looking for the link when I stumbled across the mini review of the old Mindjammer RPG. It looks interesting, so I am going to take a quick look on Youtube and see what some of the gang on there make of it. There may even be actual play sessions, if I'm lucky. I did find a couple of reviews and an actual play to have a look at.

LATER - After watching the first episode. -  The setting looks interesting, but the game uses FATE rules, which I am not overly keen on. I did find some info on drivethroughrpg to dig into.

I have some bits of Warhammer scenery to glue and paint to add to my terrain scatter.

Ivor Cogdell

Thoughts On - Hobby Shopping - Updated

 Hi Everybody,

I have been pondering spending in the hobby at the moment, as I have been earning a wage for the last 6 months, after a two-year gap of employment. There are some great products out there, but I have a problem justifying the expense of it.

Hardback rule sets have come in at £20 - £30 pounds, with fantastic artwork. But the problem is, we have a major crisis coming down the road at us all, with food and energy bills going up and that's just what we know about at the moment.

There is usually .pdf files of games and rules available, which is great, but without a tablet, you are usually looking at a large outlay of ink to do it justice, which does not come cheap. (I don't think I have turned my printer on this year, as I was on my last cartridge.)

So the question is, "Do I spend on the hobby, now or later, go down the PDF route (with or without printing the files out), or use what I have until things calm down if they ever do."

In case you are wondering what my shopping list might be, Edition three of Five Parsecs from Home in hardback (Modiphious Press) .D100 Solo Adventures, Ironsworn Starforged, not to mention some sort of upgrade for my 12-year-old, long-suffering PC.

Do let me know if you have a similar situation in the comments and what your goody list is at the moment.

Regards all,

Ivor Cogdell

P.S. I do have the second edition of Five Parsecs From Home, which I have had for a while. I have been waiting to get some more figures and terrain, thanks to the generosity of the author, Ivan Sorensen.

P.P.S. 15 October 2022 - I have upgraded to a SATA 2 SSD, it was delayed by the postal strike, plus the events described in the post "Disaster" (3 Nov 2022"), so it has not been fitted yet. I plan to do a clean install of Windows 10 on it.

3rd November 2022 - I was made redundant at the end of last month, so that pretty much limits me to free stuff on Drive through RPG until my fortunes do an upturn. Please do comment though if you see something I should add to my wish list.

7th November - I spotted a 10" Samsung Tablet in a second-hand shop. "Not too expensive", I thought, "at £38 GBP. Once home, I found out why. I could not get a secure connection to the net. The "Play Store" was out of date and would not load. Edge, Chrome, Safari and Firefox browsers would not load. I could not download any PDF reader/editors, which is what I had planned to use it for mainly. Needless to say, it went back to the shop the next day.

A sales assistant asked, "Were you not told it was sub-standard when you bought it ?"

"No", I replied, thinking "Otherwise I would not have bought it, you idiot".

I am proud to say, I gave better service to my customers when I worked in retail. But, at least I did get my money back.

Thoughts On - The Third Edition of 5 Parsecs from Home Pt1 - Updated 28 Dec 2021.

 Hi Everybody,

Here I am again with another large gap between episodes. My gaming has lapsed for a while, for assorted reason, mainly job searching and getting fitter, not fantastically so, but I am walking better than I was. I have been watching youtube vlogs on the topic of roleplaying games and following the volcanoes in Iceland (eruption finished, but maybe a new surge or Lava flow underground), La Palma (Just finished) and Mt. Etna (Smoking).

I have an old wargame episode still in the works. The pictures are on and I am editing in the text now. I am about to shoot another quick battle using "Rally round the King" fantasy rules by Two Hour Wargames or possibly Warhammer fantasy battles (Similar to Mordheim). Its the first time that I have actually used it in anger, so I am not sure how much detail to include with it so that it does not get bogged down explaining the rules. My terrain and figures are on the table as I type. I am hoping for a weekend shoot, after I fix my flat tyre on my bike.

As you can see from the title, Ivan Sorensen has combined with Modipus to put out a hardback annual book of the Third Edition rules of Five Parsecs from home. I have not checked out the price. It has been available for a few months now, but I have only just become aware of it. There are reviews and playtests on youtube that you can watch to see if it is your sort of bash about.

There is at least one expansion pack available, as of the 3rd December 2021.

Five-Parsecs-From-Home--Expansion-1--Trailblazers-Toolkit

Have you played this latest version ? What are your thoughts ?

I have the second edition of Five Parsecs, as you may know. So, that would my next sci-fi go to when I have got some more models and terrain painted. Not sure what timeline that will be though, being honest. I hope you enjoyed my last WH 40K outing.

That's about it for today. Stay safe. Fingers crossed that COP 26 is a success, otherwise, you can start dusting off those post-Apocalypse rules to get some early life change tips.......Greta T could have a point, "We want less words and more action, people. When the government starts offering free swimming lesions, BEWARE".

Thoughts On - 5 Parsecs From Home - Second Edition - Updated.

 Hi all,

Its been a while since I did anything with my 5 Parsecs unit, mainly to do with the lack of scenery than anything else I have got some in the works, but they need assembly. I knew that Ivan had brought a second edition out, but I had not had chance to flick through it until recently. He had given it a complete overhaul, with colour headers for the different sections and tables. The tables have been given values that change the gameplay more than it did before, which is good. The enemies have bee increased to give the storyline more flavour.

I have also obtained the Every Star an opportunity, Salvage Crew and Planetary generation supplements, which can be used with the second edition. I notice that there is at least one alien race that is new on the scene since I was on his website last, along with the K'Erin. Ivan has started a paetreon group which grants members supplements on a regular basis.

He has also got a low fantasy setting -5 Miles from the Borderlands which has assorted supplements, plus a new medaeval skirmish game too.

Regards all,

Ivor Cogdell

P.S. There is now a third edition out. Check for later posts.

A Quickie

Another Quickie post for you

Hi all,
I hope you all enjoyed how it turned out at Durk's Compound, the 5150 scrap. The end was a pure improvisation bit. If you have not seen it, please have a look. I shall be finishing off my 5 Leagues from the Borderland episode soon. The Text and photos are done, just got to mash them together.
In a similar vein, I have upgraded to the second edition of 5 Parsecs From Home. I have not had chance to read it or do a print, but I am looking forward to new perils and dangers for the crew.

5 Parsecs from home 3rd Edition, 5 Leagues from the Borderland and many other great titles for the solo and cooperative players can be found at - https://www.thewargameswebsite.com/tag/nordic-weasel-games/

The Battle for Dirk's Compound - Part 5

The Battle for Dirk's Compound - Part 5 - All on edge.

Previously
Pt 1 The cast.
Pt 2 - Pre game Info, House rules.
Pt 3 - Mission Briefing
Pt 4 - The scrap starts.

Hi all,
A bit more to my battle. It would have been more, but I banged my foot and could not put any weight on it, so moving around the board was a non starter. Here is what I had left over from the other day to keep you going.

Turn 3

Activation (PEF Rep 6 NW)
Roll 1 successes - Move towards Rep5, at minimum range so stays still.

Activation (PEF Rep 5 - Middle)
Roll 1 successes - Move 8” towards enemy through cover. (Checked when he broke cover, Hank was looking the other way).

Activation (PEF Rep 2 - Right)
Roll 1 successes - Move 16” towards enemy through cover. (Checked when he broke cover, Hank was looking the other way and still raining cats and dogs).

Activation  - SA
Major Vance gets cover behind some cargo. Wanda moves right to cover the lake and Landing Pad. Andy comes out of the Habitation module. Vicky moves forward and left on the catwalk. I checked her movement inch by inch and both forces were still in cover, although it would have been close at times, if not for the storm going on. Thumper waits at the corner.

Turn 4
Activation  - SA = 15, O = 4.  - SA  go first.
Turn 4
Major Vance checks out the Cargo. Hank moves forward. Thumper moves towards the ruined wall. Andy covers the water.

Suddenly Wanda’s voice comes over the Com. ”Contact ! Contact ! I have movement at the end of the road.”

Vicky “I have Negative contact, repeat Negative contact. It was the trees swaying in the storm casting shadows, Wanda. In this storm you can hardly see past the end of your arm.”

Major Vance - “Hank, move up to the left gantry and watch with Vicky, stay alert and observe.”

An ork looks down the road
"Can't we go down that nice flat road?"

"You just want to keep your boots clean so you don't have to polish them tonight."

"So.... is that a yes ?"

"No, get back in line. and for asking dumb questions you are on cook duties as well."

The Orks to activate next.....

Sorry it was just a short post. I put together what I had from before, minus the stuff that was not applicable  due to the first contact that did not count due to the weather. I left it in so you could see where it was originally going to happen.

Regards all,

Ivor Cogdell

Thoughts On - Merry Christmas, Free Stuff and Climate Change. (Updated 2020.11.19)

Merry Christmas

Hey everybody,
I would just like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and New Year. May you and yours be safe. I hope the world will have less tension in it. The world leaders need to stop ignoring climate change, (YES, they Do believe it, They Just Don't Care so long as THEY are still in power), if they want to prove us wrong, let us see action, not words. But until then we must each do what we can to fight the problem. Even if it is just turning lights off while we are watching tv, it is something you can do. Remember to reuse plastic bags and recycle where possible.

19 November 2020 Update - Things are looking a bit brighter on the Climate Change front - Firstly, Joe Byden has become President Elect of the USA and has stated that he will rejoin the Paris Climate Change Accord. Secondly - "The UK is set to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030" - Financial Times.

I would have preferred 2025 myself, but at lease its a start. Let's see what else they come up with in the 2021 G7 summit.

 Free stuff

I have been playing about with the space RPG, Stars Without Number by Sine Nomine Publishing (free and Delux versions) and mixing it with the 5 Parsecs rules and the supplement "Every Star an opportunity" by Nordic Weasel Games. I have been throwing together a Space Sector. It is also compatible with Gurps space, Traveller, etc. Here is a look at what I have created so far.

As a Christmas Pressie from me to you, you can use it for personal use only, providing you give me credit. Please let me know if you find it useful.

Stars Without Number - Sector: 043, 565, 285 - "Beowulf".
2019.12.26-8h
Key  PG = Planetary Government.TF = Terraforming. C OS = Civilian Orbital Station, D OS = Derelict OS. M OS=Military OS.
0101 A-Vagrek -TL4, 0.9g, Higher oxygen level - meaning reduced recovery times, but explosions/flames are bigger and
harder to get under control.
 Revanchists, A Pleasure world.
It wants to gain power and control of other worlds. The world is comprised of main oceans, with assorted Islands and ice
caps. Venues -  notably "The Ice Paradise" and "The Undersea World"pleasure parks. It has a low population. The main
continent is Splatan, the smaller continent is Bruffis. It has floating cities moored to undersea peaks, sea fish farms, undersea
mining operations. It hosts a colony of Dolphins, who do make excellent space pilots.
The government is a bureaucratic form of communism. It has a large Intelligence gathering network, it seeks to exert control
with blackmail, bribery, truth drugs, etc. to extract secrets and future plans of visiting dignitaries and military personnel.
.B-Moon-Vagbos 0.7g - Military Base. Building Mechs and other stuff for covert operations. On the other side, a
Civilian Dome with low z sports.

C-C OS - "The Viewpoint". Low / zero-g sports.

E-Gas Giant Moon - Ingot. Industrial Production by GP.
Military - Peace Givers.

0102 A -Tupreen TL3 - Anarchist, Battleground. Extensive terraforming did not go well. The polluted
atmosphere caused wide variations in temperatures. Slightly reduced O2 levels and higher CO2. Runaway
greenhouse effect, but not totally uninhabitable. High mortality rate - Life is cheap.
The Tuprini live in coastal communities so that they can put out to sea when the Mechs arrive to settle their squabbles, then
scavenge parts of them to sell.  There is no insignia on the mechs, all pilots/bodies are picked up unless they are taken by a
Downtrodden Snatch Squad. They are building their own war fleet in secret.
Who controls the mechs? Vagbos Peace Givers.
B - DOS.

C-Asteroid Belt. (Mined by Grabber Products from 0201).
Military - Downtrodden, the troops are fanatics.
Factions - Downtrodden.

0105 A - Jofir TL3  0.8g, Slightly less O2,  A C.O.W. controlled planet.
Misandry, Heavy mining. (Controlled by 0206). The dusty atmosphere creates mixed colours.
Co-operative Ethos, but males are not allowed in positions of power. They are just treated as a musclebound beast of
