Thoughts on - Alien RPG pt 1 (No spoilers)

 Hi everybody,

I have just played the first episode of the starter game of Alien RPG by Free League Games. By courtesy of my gaming buddies of long standing, Kitty, hubby Richard (the GM and NPC controller), plus the cat ( in-house random tables) and brother, John. There is a starter set and at least one expansion module to get. Richard got the game at a local games store.  Character creation was simple, just a few stats blocks and choices to make. I believe the online community have made content for the game as well. There are character sheets (Static and dynamic) and graphics to download on the website. There may be a Roll 20 virtual setting, but I do not know for sure about that. We were using video conferencing, but this only lasts for an hour, unless you get the premium version.

The introduction got us into the mood of the game and established character types and frictions or connections between players. I am playing a space dock, red haired roughneck, James, nicknamed "Rooster" Kincaid.

There is a good setting and introduction to the background to the story. It took about three hours to get to the second act. How and why you get to this point is up to your GM and your characters. You can do as you please, at one point one of our children set fire to a lab. Yes, you will be pleased to know that there are stats for children. I(f you allow your actual munchkins to play, is up to you. (Our GM rated it as a certificate 15, for all of the violence yet to come). We did try to do a recording, but sadly, it failed. (The others were ok, but have not been edited by the gm yet. I will add a link when ready).

Once we arrived at act two, here is where you follow your own path. It took us about three hours of play to get to this point.  If you have seen the original films, you know what to expect. If you have not, you are in for a treat. Go find Alien and its sequels, including its clash with predator.

I was the first one out of the airlock and down the ladder, wish me luck....

Thoughts On - Eco Warriors 3

 Hi Everyone,

Cop 27 has finally rolled around. I was keen to hear what progress had been made since COP 26 in Glasgow had departed from the headlines. As many protesters had predicted, we are still showing the highest levels in methane and CO2 emissions. In other words, "Bugger All!". With another year wasted.

The political leaders will cite the assorted problems we have had in the last year, such as the war and the energy crisis, the UK election and the following fiasco of a budget. Their response was to go back on the same old solutions that got us into a mess in the first place. Start a new coal mine "But it will be very efficient, promise". Start a new nuclear power plant "It will be ready in about 15 to 20 years, all being well and within budget, promise" . To the energy companies, "Here are 101 licences to drill for more oil in the north sea, have fun! We won't mind if you spill a bit now and then."

BIGWIGS  Take Note, We are all out of Magic Wands, You need to fix it

What they should be doing is change to a coalition government to stop all of the squabbling between them, pump more money into battery research and manufacture, boost jobs, increase renewable energy sources, including hydro power. If every bridge had a water wheel under it, we would have more power than we could shake a stick at. Make as much of them out of recycled materials as possible.

There is no planet B, we are here to stay

I do wish COP 27 well, its aim is less promises, more actual dosh on the table. Good luck with that at the moment. The developing countries say give us some dosh, we are not to blame for this. Which is true. To be fair, we have been giving them aid in one form or another, when it suits us, through charities etc. Hopefully, they can come to some sort of agreement. We are all in this together, as some folks seem to forget.

Another Lightbulb Moment

UK Science and research seem to think their funding will be cut in the latest funding review. Another short sighted move. We have world renowned science teams, but they can only produce results with a steady assured flow of money. Once the money stops, the "boffins" are poached to other countries where they get more pay and perks, then investment in this country goes somewhere else. When the breakthrough comes along, we have to buy it off them, instead of being able to sell it to them. Idiots. The politicians are supposed to be well educated, act like it.

Finally

A well known saying from the Second World War comes back into everyday use , "Turn that light off !". Good advice.

Thoughts On - Disaster Strikes

 Hi everyone,

It had been a disaster of a week, in fact, not to put too fine a point on it, it had been a double whammy last week. To start with, my email account was hacked and the site was totally deleted by two despicable souls, who should be locked up in a small smelly cell, with the key dropped in the nearest bottomless pit. On top of that calamity, I finally discovered that I had been made redundant.

I could not have been zapped at a more unfortunate time, so I hope they are happy with themselves. All of the communications about my pending redundancy had gone to my email, which then got wiped before I saw them. Not that the cherubs in the "Human Resources" team had any idea of my problem, of course. I had not any clue as to what was going on when my timesheet went blank when I went to check my shift for the following day. I knew that some others in my team were leaving; but since I  had not received any notifications over any of the other channels to say that I was being "Ramped Down", as they put it in political speak land. Just call it redundancy and be done with it. The bigwigs had left my team leader in the dark too, so he could not confirm or deny what the situation was.

Once I had got another email up and running, numerous emails were sent off, followed by frequent calls to automated helpdesks that just requested me to send an email instead. I tracked down the number of another local branch and after confirming my id, they were able to state that I WAS one of those that had "Walked the plank" off the pirate ship.

I am now beginning my search for the next way to earn myself a crust. I have an updated CV to pass on to my agency recruitment team and look forward to when I can be a productive member of the community once more.

Time will tell.

Regards to one and all, as the showbiz folks say, "Break a leg", if you are job hunting like me.

Ivor Cogdell

P.S. The printer is running out of ink to print my CV. It's a good job we have the net, too, otherwise, I would be stuck.

Staycation

 Hi Everyone,

I've got a staycation going on at the moment. I have had a ride along our local river bank and a ride from Berkswell, going towards Meriden and then swinging over to Henley in Arden on Saturday. I first did this route on foot 40 years ago with some walking pals of mine. My journey crosses the HS2 high-speed rail route, now under construction, so I wanted to see it once again in its mostly unspoiled state. Looking at an online map, I see they have had to change the walking / cycling "Green Route" to Kenilworth as well. The start is on the south side of the tracks, in a club car park, and across a couple of fields before you get back on the normal route.

One of my workmates put me on to "Fall Guys" - the PC game. I have not had a chance to download it yet, but it looks fun on the mobile clip I saw. I just hope my poor old PC can take the strain.

I had the chance of going to a blues session tonight, but it was an outdoor event, so I gave it a miss, there was a 70% chance of rain.

I did a bit to my "Nations Battle" today. I was working out what occurred in turn five, which was a bit of a slow nightmare for me since I was so rusty at it. I still have a couple of elements to work on. Time for dinner. I shall give it a go another day.

Regards,

Ivor Cogdell

Holiday break

 Hi Everyone,

It's holiday time again. I have just been for a few days in Blackpool with some mates. I have some more to take yet, but I'm not sure where to go yet, apart from it being down south, or exactly when. So if things slow down a bit, that's why. I have got a Firefly episode to post here. The garden needs doing too. I have a cold to boot.

Take care,

Ivor Cogdell

Update - 6 Sept 2022. I got some of the garden done. Also, see the Staycation entry.

Ships Log

Turn 1:   Harvest, Red Sun

Magistrate Higgins is the final word of law on Higgins' Moon, a small moon that is a primary export of high-quality mud, used for clay and in ceramic substances with numerous applications. He treats his workers, known as "Mudders", harshly, almost as slaves, and hands out strict punishment to any who crossed him.

Desperate for funds you take up some Mud work for $200. Your available funds increase to $3,200.

You take the opportunity to approach Magistrate Higgins looking for more taxing and rewarding work.

You can choose the two following jobs:

  • Mud Run Muir

  • Mud Pipeline Liann Jiun

Turn 2: You decide to fly to Liann Jiun via the Space Bazaar. The Artificial Intelligence Auto-Loader decides that the most efficient action is to Work the Lian Jiun job and then fly. 3 heavy contraband are loaded aboard ship.

You burn two fuel as you set course for Lian Jiun. The ship trembles as you enter high order and burn rapidly toward Space Bazaar where extra fuel can be taken on board.

The journey starts quietly as you burn through the black. ‘What’s that noise?’ you ponder as the engine overheats. With no mechanic you desperately use a spare part to patch the problem. ‘Gorram parts ain’t free!’ you mumble as you continue your flight.

As you near your first point of call the Nav Comm alerts twice barks ‘Reavers on the hunt’. You look at the Nav Comm as Reaver Cutter 1 and 2 move slowly away from Reaver Space dropping small sensors in their wake.

"Thankfully you see Space Bazaar ahead.

You see another Firefly called Jetwash entering space. As you cross paths the Artificial Intelligence Trader Interface sparks into life: ‘Would you like to trade?’ and a quick response ‘No, I’m penniless’ comes back from Murphy, captain of the Jetwash as the ship burns away in the direction of White Sun. "Maybe next time. Safe Landings, Watch out for them Reavers."

Space Bazaar Control: "Yanky, you are cleared to dock at Lock 45.

Jubal : "Thank you control, and its, "Yun Qi".

"That's what I said "Yanky."

"Its pro.......Never mind. Thank you, Control, we have your nav beacons locked. Docking to Auto."

"Confirmed".

"Docking completed........... Checking Seals ........Confirmed. Welcome to Space Bazaar. Please have the usual documents and Med samples ready".

"Thank you Control. Will do."

Turn 3: As per your instructions you look to buy replacement fuel. The AI suggests replenish the 2 fuel spent in the burn and the 1 part for $500 total.

As part of the same action you can consider a total of three items for purchase from up to 3 visible items at the Space Bazaar and consider up to three random none advertised items. E.g. 3 random, 1 visible + 2 random, 2 visible + 1 random or 3 visible. You can then choose up to 2 items of the 3 to buy. This is a free action as you are buying replacement fuel.

You decide to hire a Gun Hand, a cheap mercenary called Rodrigo Ponsonby.

You use one fuel to burn toward Liann Jiun.

On the way you hear a distant signal, a call for help. Saying a prayer you slide on by. Then you notice the Alliance Cruiser moving stealthily in your direction, possibly interested by your contraband! Your ship lurches as the engine coil nearly gives out! You have to replace the whole damn mess, using both parts to keep flying.

Finally you arrive at Liann Jiun and touch down before any breaks!

Turn 4:  You work the job on Liann Jiun, offloading the contraband. As you do so you encounter an alliance check point. You can’t risk them digging in your records, but luckily neither you nor Rodrigo are wanted by the alliance so they let you proceed.

You gain $2,800 and become solid with Magistrate Higgins. You pay $100 to Rodrigo, his salary for completing the job.

"Let's see what's on the net and who needs something taking somewhere"..

"Vance Dorwitty, the celebrated HoloFlic magnate, was attacked today in SnapDuds Nightclub. His lawyer, Byron McPhee later stated it was a disgruntled fan who had not appreciated him sacking Goriana Sprocket from his latest series of "Beeforamoid for Two". It has not been announced who is to replace Miss Sprocket, but speculation has turned to .......".

Firefly Nav Comp - Turn 2

 Hi Every body,

I'm not sure how big this graphic will come. It shows the positions of the three ships that are active at the moment.

You can follow along by reading The Signal.- Kindly provided Richard, our GM. Ricjhard and Kitty, his better half are flying the other two ships. His brother, John, may be joining us at some point. Which means there may be a couple of spare positions going. First past the post wins the spot.

If you would like to join in the game please email me at ivorcogdell "at" hotmail . com with "Firefly Game 1 applicant" in the subject header. Please note, the turns are fairly frequent, one to two day intervals usually.

Regards all.

Ivor Cogdell

P.S.

Sorry, folks, this one sort of died a death due to work pressures, for the time being..

Firefly - The Signal (Where everybody is in the game) Chapter 1 Turn 0 - 2.

THE SIGNAL

The Firefly Initiative

A ship will bring you work, a gun will help you keep it. A captain’s goal is simple: find a crew, find a job and keep flying.

The Unification War resulted in a collapse of trade, particularly in the outer territories. To solve this problem Parliament has launched the Firefly Initiative.

Niska Shipyards at Ezra is selling ex-military hulks and Parliament are providing free registration for new captains willing to brave the black.

Already new ships have been sighted operating around the Space Bazaar and Harvest in Red Sun.

CHAPTER 1 - First Time in the Captain’s Chair

So you finally took the plunge and borrowed enough credits for a ship to call your own. You’re the master of your destiny and right now that destiny looks mighty uncertain! You’re in debt up to your eyeballs with a creditor that’s not the sort of man to be trifled with.

GOAL 1: Makin’ Friends: You ain’t gonna get far in the Verse without makin’ a few friends. It’s just good business.

To complete goal, be solid with two different agents. After completing this goal take a goal token.

GOAL 2: Seein’ Daylight: Carrying a heap a’ debt on your back is no way to live. Scrape together enough cash to get back in the black.

To complete goal, have $6,000 in hand and your first goal token. After completing this goal, take a second goal token.

GOAL 3: Feeding the Shark: Head over to pay off your loan shark. Adelia Niska is not a patient man.

The first player who travels to Ezra with two goal tokens and then pays the bank $6,000 wins this chapter. You own your ship free and clear.

Reaver Alert

Reavers are believed by most of the 'verse to be men that went insane at the edge of space and became savage. They stared into the void beyond and became what they saw: nothing. They gave into their primal nature and all that was civilized was discarded.

Reaver vessels have been sighted at the edge of the Burnham System. The Core Worlds of White Sun are safely guarded by Alliance forces, but the outer Colonies remain at risk. Caution is advised when travelling through Border or Rim Space.

Fly safe brave captains.

Alliance Patrols

Harken, the Alliance Agent is to be found aboard the Alliance Cruiser which is patrolling the White Sun area. Random checks of vessels within that area may occur leading to confiscation of illegal goods and possible fines.

An Alliance Corvette has been sighted at Cortex Relay 2 and is free to travel within any system, hunting down those who would do Parliament harm.

Most Wanted

The Alliance Cruiser patrols White Sun, however some miscreants still persist in a life of crime. Parliament have released their top three most wanted:

River Tam REWARD $4,000: Record Classified – Parliament level security clearance required. Target wanted alive. Caution: This young woman is armed and dangerous, use extreme caution. Last seen on Persephone. May be travelling with her brother Simon Tam.

Simon Tam REWARD $2,600: Wanted for the crimes of: Resisting arrest, impersonating an Officer, Criminal trespass, felony aiding and abetting and public indecency. Last seen on Persephone. May be travelling with his sister River Tam.

Crow REWARD $3,500: For the crimes of: Felony murder, premeditated murder, involuntary murder, aggravated murder and is armed and dangerous. Last seen on Regina. This ex-employee of Niska took it upon himself to start torturing and murdering those wanting to join the Firefly Initiative.

CHAPTER 1 – TURN 1

Higgins, Harvest – Jubal Early obtained two jobs. (1) Transport 5 cargo from Harvest to Muir – Shipping / Legal – Reward $3,000 + $500 Transport bonus (2) Transport 3 contraband from Harvest to Liann Jiun – Smuggling / Illegal - Reward $2,800 + $500 Grifter bonus

Badger, Persephone – Womack chooses a job: Transport 2 cargo from Persephone to Three Hills – Shipping / Legal – Reward $1,600 + $500 Grifter bonus +/- $500 based on negotiated test.

Space Bazaar – Murphy purchased Tracey an unlucky Grifter for $100 and Scrapper a dirty leech Pilot for $200.

Amnon Duul, Space Bazaar – Murphy obtained two jobs. (1) Transport 2 cargo from Bernedette to Shadow – Shipping / Legal – Reward $1,800 (2) Travel to Hera – Task / Legal – Reward $800 + $400 per Negotiate + $500 per Grifter

CHAPTER 1 – TURN 2
Harvest – Jubal Early worked the transport Harvest to Liann Jiun, loading 3 contraband.

Harvest to Space Bazaar – Jubal Early burned to the Space Bazaar. He had a slight mechanical problem along the way and the burn drew the attention of the Reavers. Their cutters moved slightly out from Reaver Space.

Persephone – Womack worked the transport Persephone to Three Hills and loaded 2 cargo.

Persephone to White Sun near Athens – Womack burned to White Sun near Athens. This burn drew the attention of the Alliance Corvette. Just as Womack was burning away from the Corvette the engines overheated. There was a fire and while bringing this under control the Enforcer Mercenary was fried and jettisoned into space.

Space Bazaar to Bernedette – Murphy burned to Bernedette, drawing the attention of the Alliance Cutter. The Operative in the Alliance Cutter intercepted Murphy at Bernedette and arrested Tracey the unlucky grafter. All other papers were in order and Murphy was released from custody.

Bernedette – Murphy worked the job loading two cargo.

Thoughts On - Hobby Shopping - Updated

 Hi Everybody,

I have been pondering spending in the hobby at the moment, as I have been earning a wage for the last 6 months, after a two-year gap of employment. There are some great products out there, but I have a problem justifying the expense of it.

Hardback rule sets have come in at £20 - £30 pounds, with fantastic artwork. But the problem is, we have a major crisis coming down the road at us all, with food and energy bills going up and that's just what we know about at the moment.

There is usually .pdf files of games and rules available, which is great, but without a tablet, you are usually looking at a large outlay of ink to do it justice, which does not come cheap. (I don't think I have turned my printer on this year, as I was on my last cartridge.)

So the question is, "Do I spend on the hobby, now or later, go down the PDF route (with or without printing the files out), or use what I have until things calm down if they ever do."

In case you are wondering what my shopping list might be, Edition three of Five Parsecs from Home in hardback (Modiphious Press) .D100 Solo Adventures, Ironsworn Starforged, not to mention some sort of upgrade for my 12-year-old, long-suffering PC.

Do let me know if you have a similar situation in the comments and what your goody list is at the moment.

Regards all,

Ivor Cogdell

P.S. I do have the second edition of Five Parsecs From Home, which I have had for a while. I have been waiting to get some more figures and terrain, thanks to the generosity of the author, Ivan Sorensen.

P.P.S. 15 October 2022 - I have upgraded to a SATA 2 SSD, it was delayed by the postal strike, plus the events described in the post "Disaster" (3 Nov 2022"), so it has not been fitted yet. I plan to do a clean install of Windows 10 on it.

3rd November 2022 - I was made redundant at the end of last month, so that pretty much limits me to free stuff on Drive through RPG until my fortunes do an upturn. Please do comment though if you see something I should add to my wish list.

7th November - I spotted a 10" Samsung Tablet in a second-hand shop. "Not too expensive", I thought, "at £38 GBP. Once home, I found out why. I could not get a secure connection to the net. The "Play Store" was out of date and would not load. Edge, Chrome, Safari and Firefox browsers would not load. I could not download any PDF reader/editors, which is what I had planned to use it for mainly. Needless to say, it went back to the shop the next day.

A sales assistant asked, "Were you not told it was sub-standard when you bought it ?"

"No", I replied, thinking "Otherwise I would not have bought it, you idiot".

I am proud to say, I gave better service to my customers when I worked in retail. But, at least I did get my money back.

Thoughts on - Shows 1

 Hi Everyone,

I was looking forward to going to a couple of the wargame shows this year, Alumwell in Wolverhampton and Barrage in Stafford. Both, i see are now cancelled, unfortunately. Are there any shows going ahead that I can get to by public transport from Birmingham UK ? (Salute- London, I would imagine, would be one, but not sure what travel times involved on the tube.)

I saw one in the Walsall area, but it was to far away from the bus lanes. The Birmingham games expo is still on as far as I know, but I don't  think there is any wargaming apart from board games. Please correct me if I am wrong on that point, as I have never been to one, yet.

Ivor Cogdell

Thoughts On - Eco Warriors 2

 Hi Everyone,

I have my Green hat on again. I was chatting with one of my mates regarding the Pro's and Con's of protesting, leaving the legal argument aside. This had been prompted by a protest group demonstrating outside oil terminals recently. My friend stated that most of the protestors would be only there for the sake of protesting and causing disruption, regardless of what the actual issue was. As he put it, they belonged to "Rent-A-Mob".

I agreed that the "Any protest will do" attitude was not a good basis for protesting, but stated that some may be there for that reason, but that there would still be the vast majority of people who did care about the actual issues involved and whose voices should be heard and their views considered, none the less. He did give way on the vague possibility, but I don't think my argument gave him any misgivings.

Another friend mentioned the problems that we face going along this route. I reminded him that these green activists are fighting for HIS future along with everybody else’s. I asked him "What would you prefer in your senior moments, to be relaxing in the back garden on a nice summer’s day, sipping a cool drink in hand, or coughing and spilling the warm drink all over your trousers, peering through smog and heat haze".

There is a very good Podcast authored by The Guardian newspaper in the UK, entitled "Carbon Bombs". This gives an insight into what the energy companies are planning, against what they say they are doing. Have a listen. Then start worrying and do something to help the situation.

https://www.theguardian.com/news/audio/2022/may/18/the-carbon-bombs-set-to-blow-up-the-worlds-climate-pledges

To our Green Warriors out there, please keep plugging away, don't give up heart. Your voices and actions DO COUNT FOR A GEAT DEAL. You will prove to history that at least some of us had heard the alarm bells ringing and were trying to do something about it before it was too late. I personally think it is already too late, but we have got to mitigate the problems as much as we can.

Have you been on a protest march ? Would you go on another one ? How were you treated ?

I would like to read your comments below.

Regards to all,

Ivor Cogdell.

Thoughts On - Ukraine and Russia - Updated 06/09/2022

 Hello Everybody,                                                                                                         20 March 2022.

I am doing this post in case some of our Russian comrades have managed to get onto the net and found themselves on my blog. Thank you for reading this and I would like to confirm that you are most welcome. I do want to add my tiny voice to the great shout that is echoing around the world, demanding that Vladimir Putin stop this totally unjust war against the citizens of Ukraine. Despite what you were told on your totally gagged and castrated news service, (did you notice the dissenting voices were going silent, one by one), they were not going to attack Russia in any way, shape or form. As you will hear from the lips of your own conscripted soldiers that do come back home to you, once this war is over. Sadly, that will not be all of them that left your country.

To the Warrior Men and Women of Ukraine, we Salute your Courage and valour. Your qualities are a beacon against oppression. The World is sharing your anger and pain at this foul crime you have endured. All despots should know and be sure of, that there will be a reckoning for their actions.

We hear on our news that there are over three million refugees that have fled the conflict and many more who would love to go. The Russian forces are shelling the "Safe Haven" corridors, turning them into death traps. They have to follow the cowardly orders of their commanders, bombing residential blocks, maternity hospitals, theatres and schools that were public shelters. The Russian forces had shelled and taken control of The Chernobyl Nuclear Plant and attacked other Nuclear plants in the south, but they have now being forced back from this facility. Whole communities lie in smoking ruins in the east of the country. Food stocks are unable to reach the ports, the sea routes are mined.

To the brave protesters of Russia. Thank you, too for your courage. You stood up for what was right and just, despite the possible cost to yourselves. We salute you too. We know that that your actions would have been joined by many more, but for circumstances beyond their control.

We in the West do not blame the Russian people for this gross and unwarranted act of Barbarity against Ukraine and its people, but your cowardly leader and his cronies, who have gotten rich by siphoning away your saving into their own pockets, who seems to be stuck in the past with hopes of greatness. He has achieved Infamy around the world. He is becoming a second Hitler. Sadly, it is you who will suffer in his place, as the world turns its back on Russia and its elite, you will feel its everyday effects. There is less choice in the shops. Less money to spend. Fewer places to go. That, at least, you know is true. It is happening now. It will get worse.

Hopefully, one day we can be reunited in peace again.

Ivor Cogdell

UK

P.S. It's now the 6th September 2022 and the war has still not ended. Putin has weathered the sanctions and has let some of the grain shipments get through the blockade and out of the ports. He is now stopping the NORD 2 gas supplies to Germany, (They blame maintenance over an oil leak for the stoppage.)

Nuclear Inspectors have been allowed to visit the nuclear power plant, currently, outside electrical supplies have been cut off, but it is on internal power.

Energy bills all over the world are soaring out of control. Companies have seen prices triple, with the hope of a new Conservative leader riding to the rescue

Macdonalds have returned to Russia under a new name, they were bought out by a Russian Billionaire. I suppose they were cutting their losses. No doubt the shareholders were happy. I just hope the workers got their jobs back.

Nations Battle Report 1 Part 1 - Background - Updated - 23.01.2024

 Hi Everyone,

Nations Battle Report No. 1 Part One - The Background to the conflict.

This is my first outing on here of Nations, my home made battleground. It is the year, BE.2571. It takes place on the continent of Bjantffas, the home of the Btjantff Empire, mainly controlled by the Elves, with a smattering of other races around the edges. The area had recently been devastated by volcanic eruption to the south, The central capital, Nitan, Grey with a red dot) has been built in an extinct volcanic crater. It has been devastated by a Dragon taking up residence in its main living area.

The Continent of Bjantffas.

Note: Smaller Island nations not shown on this map.

Capital  Nitan 21,100 (40,000 gp). - Ruled by a science council, backed by landowners. A main City Guard. Two main routes in and out of the capital, Nitan`s Might the north east pass and Nitan`s Protection, a tunnel dug in to the extinct volcano to the south. Roads and villages nestle in the foothills.

Latest News - A dragon has awoke and moved into Nitan and has wrecked most of the major buildings. The nobility, followed by the rest of the able bodied population have fled f the capital, heading west, leaving assorted treasures behind them. The roads are clogged, panic is rife. They are easy prey for bandits, or former guards who see the opportunity to go rogue in the chaos.  The remains are being picked over by thieves. Food stores have been ransacked, intact supplies would be buried among the ruins.

Council leaders - Socrel Lelius (Elf) Trade Guild, Wenda Hardeholme (Dwarf) Mine and bank Owner, Eldran Torsund -Gem Dealer, all survived an assassination attack,  Argyle Hoonfest- Army Commander, Grag Tern -Navy Commander. Advisors FOL, Tymorae, Gaia, Druid. They plan to set up a base of operations on the coast.

Former Accomodation - Battle of Atris Bay Tavern and Hotel.   Howling Bear traders,  The Sentry Officers College - destroyed, The Red Banner Traders Guild - wrecked. The Black Spider Queen Inn -Destroyed.  The Full Warehouse Pub. Nitan’s Arms.

The Army HQ and Admiralty - Destroyed above ground, but who is in the secret bunker - tasked to the rebuilding of the Capital if disaster ever came?.  The Heralds Court - Destroyed. Guild Row - Destroyed. The Famed Mage Tower - Destroyed.  What was let loose to roam the ruins? The basement Vault contained some book copies from the Great Library at 7 Towers,  in the Country of Achin, to the West. Anything else ?. Nitan Bank - Destroyed - Partially emptied.

The Great Library of Nitan survived, so far, being mostly underground. Science College-Destroyed. The Followers Of Light Temple (Which was being repaired, then destroyed again in the earthquake and now has a Dragon sitting on it). Hanvers Palace-Destroyed. Tymorae‘s Chapel - Destroyed, but with its gold vault un-looted, as yet.  The Druid Grove was turned to ashes. Gaia Hall survived the initial chaos, because it was small and insignificant. The Indoor Market survived. The Lower Science College survived. The Abandoned Gold Mine - Very big, it connects to a large cave and lava tube system. It is quite full with peasants and others, who may be richer, but most were lost and starved to death or captured by its dark cruel, residents. I wonder who else has been disturbed in there?

The Stone Circle Teleport had been the scene of bloody conflict, surrounded by clerics and wizards trying to get out. Some got sent to random, forgotten, locations as they rushed their spells, without adequate supplies for what lay at the other places.

Most of the Ruling Council of Nine were killed by assassins among their own Guard. Bandits attacked the refugees, who were fleeing mainly to the west along the main Northern exit. The southern tunnel through the mountain intersected a cave system and way down to the Underdark. During the disaster and the lack of food, the guard posts watching over the exit were deserted and the Goblin tribes are making the most of it.

They have ransacked villages for slaves and prowl the ruins of the capital for treasure. Some of the national guard from the Red Sector, where the Southern Tunnel emerges among Nitan's Fingers, have been tracking one of the goblin bands that have been rampaging across the countryside.

The Battleground

I am using a homebrew rules mix of Rally Round the King by Two Hour Wargames. For their latest games check out their website. I am on turn five at the moment.

The western shoreline of Lake Nitan's Tears will be our battleground.

Regards,

Ivor Cogdell

P.S. 18 May 2022 - Yes, this is still taking place, I'm halfway through the project, but was not sure if it was the right mood at the moment with what is actually going on in Ukraine.

P.P.S. 6 September - Just having another go at it. Work and holidays got in the way. Working out what went on in turn five was a bit of a nightmare since I was so rusty, I still have a couple of elements to work on.

I mislaid my photos, but will keep looking

Red Alert Board 1 - January - December 2022.

 Hi Everybody,

This is the start of my Red Alert Board Post. Depending on the number of items on it will dictate how often it gets updated. I will do backdated posts too.

Red Alert Board - January 2022

31st December 2021 - 1st January  - Colorado Wildfires started by power lines being blown over, destroying over 500 homes. Three people are missing.

2nd January - Obituary Richard Erskine Frere Leakey, paleoanthropologist, conservationist and politician, born 19 December 1944; died 2 January 2022.

 https://www.theguardian.com/science/2022/jan/03/richard-leakey-obituary

I remember the original amazement at the discovery of fossil number 1470 and the others as they gradually made their appearance on the human tree or rather, as we think of it now, the bush of life.

4th January - The stark truth is that many of our rivers are little more than open sewers or chemical soup instead of highways of life and beauty. They are also heavily contaminated by fertilizer runoff. Some farms near the rivers have seen the light and are not going to plow the areas close to the rivers, but they do say it will take over ten years to recover.

Update  1st Nov 2022 - A BBC report highlights the problem, pointing the finger at too many poultry farms in the Welsh uplands, which create a fertilizer to be added to fields, which are already saturated with waste, which eventually finds its way into the river Wye. Not enough monitoring occurs of the spreading and the water quality, due to lack of funds. The report states that Scotland has been doing something about its river problem since the early 2000s and they are seeing quality improvements in their rivers and beaches. So a solution can be found, but it will take time, the will to do it, and, as always, money.

6th January - China has improved the capability of its prototype Fusion reactor. These create energy by fusing atoms together instead of splitting them in an atomic bomb. . Many countries take part in nuclear fusion research to some extent, led by the European Union, the USA, Russia, and Japan, with vigorous programs also underway in China, Brazil, Canada, and Korea.

8th January - Hundreds of Indians were killed in a blizzard. They were trapped by trees that fell down on the cars and on the road, the trees were snapped by the weight of the snow. Some died of hypothermia, and others by carbon monoxide poisoning when they ran their heaters to keep warm.

9th January -

Gabriella D'Cruz: Global Youth Champion

This year's BBC Food Chain award-winner and her mission to change lives and revive oceans using seaweed. A new pilot project to harvest seaweed in the bay of India has begun production. It does not plan to sell its harvest to the big companies that have established supply chains, but to local food outlets and Japanese Sushi bars that will pay a better price for quality items grown locally instead of having to import it at high prices.  Once the demand has been established, it plans to use local environmentalists in the fishing community to expand the project, with a guaranteed market established for its product and at a guaranteed price point.
