Thoughts On - Trump Attacks Venezuela. Updated.

 Hi Everybody,                                                                                                           3rd - 4th Jan 2026

We hear news from the other side of the pond that President Trump has just had a tizzy and commanded US forces to attack Venezuela, abducting the sitting president on the justification that they are moving drugs to the USA, which they have been doing. But the US has been blowing the boats out of the water, against International law, stop and seize, not kill them. They also swiped a couple of Venezuelan oil tankers, in part reparation for what the government is owed in the past, but I thought that was called by it's other name. piracy on the high seas?

The Venezuelan President and first lady had been flown to New York and are being kept under guard.

Right off the bat. I would like to say I am not an expert in this matter, and this is only my humble opinion, whether the actions that they have taken are internationally legal or not. Could the armed forces be charged with unlawfully kidnapping a foreign head of state? Did I hear that they had been planning this move for months? So much for the Nobel Peace Prize.

What it will allow him to say now is that Venezuelan immigrants now pose a threat to the USA, so ICE can pick them off the streets as they please, hopefully for them with no comeback, whether that is true or not is debatable.

His pal "Big Bad Vlad" must be laughing his socks off right about now. There will be no more supposedly "moral high ground" for Donald to perch on when he calls him next. Not that it was making any difference. I would love to read a transcript of a few of those calls, but I don't suppose they keep them at the White House, otherwise known as the fun factory.

I am awaiting more news. Here we go -

HEADLINE: Trump to run the country until transition.

Two points regarding that: Firstly, he cannot run the government that he has now competently, let alone take on another one that will actively be working against him. Secondly, once he does have power in there, that just means his cronies can move in and asset-strip the place as he has done with the USA, while no one is looking, or maybe he is past caring if they see or not.

Next in his sights, we hear it may be Canada or possibly Greenland. More of his allies to duff up. If you read it in a novel, you would think the plot was far-fetched. But here we are. Strange days indeed. He is totally off his trolley, but no one seems to care. Is this the beginning of the end for the USA?

Good luck, everybody,

Ivor Cogdell

Thoughts On - Busy Bunny

 Hi Everyone,

This is just to let you know that I have not deserted you good people out there in gameland. I have been catching up with real life stuff, as you do and it has thrown a spanner into my gaming stuff. It had been so long since I was on here that I had to search a few times to find it with google.

I have got a couple of bits of terrain from my pal M, (a bit less to pack) and they will star in my reworking of my Nations battle report, which I have been trying to get done for ages. I may just do a reset. I have a few more celtic warriors to do, thanks to Wargames Illustrated Magazine adding them to their front cover.

I have also started to work on a painting that has been idle for a while, as I needed some ideas on where to go next. I have seen a rock formation that has what I needed in the way of lighting, so I am starting to amend the skyline.

I am in the middle of pruning in the garden and the Jazz festival has just sailed through, I visited three new venues and bands. I visited the tribute area to Ozzy Ozbourne Passing Away in the local museum.

There has been no Alien gaming for a while, but I am still in touch with my other gamers. All are doing ok.

Now I have got the site updated and added a bit more into Red Alert 4 page, I can do a bit of painting with a clear conscience. I will see if I can find any wargaming podcasts to listen to while I am slopping paint about.

Regards all,

Ivor Cogdell

P.S. Oh yes, on the subject regarding to my mate being evicted by his landlord, which I mentioned in a previous podcast, well social services said that they have found him a place to rent about an hour away from where he is now, but he has not got the keys or a moving date as yet. He said he is swamped with boxes and can hardly swing a cat in his living room, as they say. He needs to be able to shift some stuff before he can do any more packing. But he is more cheerful than before, now that the process is under way.

In the wars 2

 Hi folks,

After recovering from a wonky back, I have a PC problem. I get locked out of my PC. It refuses me access to the login screen. I had to take it to the local PC Repair Dude and get him to fix it. "Thanks, Kevin of Chandler's Computers." Along with an SSD upgrade to speed things up a bit. You do notice the difference to loading times, so do go ahead if you are thinking of having one installed.

I am just catching up with my Job search and reinstalling my progs on to the faster system at the moment. I had a nice day out at the local Sea Life centre yesterday with a couple of pals.

Google Analytics say I need to tweak something in the settings on here, so I will give it a bash now.

In the wars

 Hi Everyone,

This is just a quick status report for you. Unfortunately, I have been unable to post for the last three weeks, due to sustaining a back and leg injury, which was keeping me out of action. Touch wood, I am over the worst, it is just affecting my mobility at the moment.

I have been making Eco Warrior notes on my phone and I have been starting to type those up. Thanks to all the Youtubers that have entertained me over the months and years and keep my spirits up. I have watched a couple of reports of SALUTE 2023 Wargame Show. Great as ever, folks.

Have you tried any of the Artificial Intelligence chatbots that are springing up on the internet, Google and Bing? What do you think ? Will you be using them to generating anything for your settings ? Plots, layouts etc.

Regards all,

Ivor Cogdell

Thoughts on - US Gun Laws - Updated 8 May 2023.

 Hi Everyone,

I got onto this topic when I was replying to a friend's Facebook note, regarding Covid 19 and its effects on all our lives.  A reply was made by a lady to cherish what you have and be kind to everyone. This is a sentiment which I totally agree with. But some do not. For them, it is too easy to turn that reaction into rage and hate. I replied as follows.

" Yet there are still mass killings of kids and teachers in the States. Their Gun laws are total madness. If the laws don't work to protectSource you, what good are they? Corruption and big corporations run the show. The political parties need to take a long hard look at themselves and rethink their priorities. I am surprised that the parents do not sue the congressmen who keep voting the gun laws, whenever there is a shooting. They need a real-life "Jason Bull" to charge them with "Accessory to murder, before the fact". Fine them directly and throw some in jail, then they would not be so keen to evade their duties to the public."

The President has tried to do the right thing, but he is foiled by the gun lobby and their friends at every turn. When anyone can buy an assault rifle with no checks in place, like the latest case. this will keep happening. They feel they cannot trust the law to protect them. But there is protection and there is destruction. Their history has not done them any favours.

Now more than ever before, they need to see the bigger picture. Global Warming is here NOW, never mind 2050. If we do not share the resources wisely, they will surely wreak a bloodbath as they fight the rich for what they will not give up. Lessen the loss of life and do the right thing. Otherwise, we will all have a lesson on Evolution in Action.

08 April 2023 - Kentucky Bank robbery - 6 shot dead, including the shooter.

14 April 2023 - Five more people killed in a bank robbery gone wrong, including the bank robber, with others injured. It just goes on and on and on.

07 May 2023 - Shopping Mall, Dallas, Texas - Gunman kills 9 and wounds 7 and is then shot dead by a passing policeman. - Source Sky News.

08 May 2023 - President Joe Biden has asked the Republican Party to help pass gun control laws, in the wake of this latest shooting. - Source Sky News

Thoughts On - Disaster Strikes

 Hi everyone,

It had been a disaster of a week, in fact, not to put too fine a point on it, it had been a double whammy last week. To start with, my email account was hacked and the site was totally deleted by two despicable souls, who should be locked up in a small smelly cell, with the key dropped in the nearest bottomless pit. On top of that calamity, I finally discovered that I had been made redundant.

I could not have been zapped at a more unfortunate time, so I hope they are happy with themselves. All of the communications about my pending redundancy had gone to my email, which then got wiped before I saw them. Not that the cherubs in the "Human Resources" team had any idea of my problem, of course. I had not any clue as to what was going on when my timesheet went blank when I went to check my shift for the following day. I knew that some others in my team were leaving; but since I  had not received any notifications over any of the other channels to say that I was being "Ramped Down", as they put it in political speak land. Just call it redundancy and be done with it. The bigwigs had left my team leader in the dark too, so he could not confirm or deny what the situation was.

Once I had got another email up and running, numerous emails were sent off, followed by frequent calls to automated helpdesks that just requested me to send an email instead. I tracked down the number of another local branch and after confirming my id, they were able to state that I WAS one of those that had "Walked the plank" off the pirate ship.

I am now beginning my search for the next way to earn myself a crust. I have an updated CV to pass on to my agency recruitment team and look forward to when I can be a productive member of the community once more.

Time will tell.

Regards to one and all, as the showbiz folks say, "Break a leg", if you are job hunting like me.

Ivor Cogdell

P.S. The printer is running out of ink to print my CV. It's a good job we have the net, too, otherwise, I would be stuck.

Staycation

 Hi Everyone,

I've got a staycation going on at the moment. I have had a ride along our local river bank and a ride from Berkswell, going towards Meriden and then swinging over to Henley in Arden on Saturday. I first did this route on foot 40 years ago with some walking pals of mine. My journey crosses the HS2 high-speed rail route, now under construction, so I wanted to see it once again in its mostly unspoiled state. Looking at an online map, I see they have had to change the walking / cycling "Green Route" to Kenilworth as well. The start is on the south side of the tracks, in a club car park, and across a couple of fields before you get back on the normal route.

One of my workmates put me on to "Fall Guys" - the PC game. I have not had a chance to download it yet, but it looks fun on the mobile clip I saw. I just hope my poor old PC can take the strain.

I had the chance of going to a blues session tonight, but it was an outdoor event, so I gave it a miss, there was a 70% chance of rain.

I did a bit to my "Nations Battle" today. I was working out what occurred in turn five, which was a bit of a slow nightmare for me since I was so rusty at it. I still have a couple of elements to work on. Time for dinner. I shall give it a go another day.

Regards,

Ivor Cogdell

Merry Christmas 2021 and Happy New Year 2022

 Hi Everybody,

Unless you have been having a break, camping in a cave, or doing something similar at the moment (possibly a wise option with what's going on with the Covid Omicron variant), the telly adverts would have tipped you off that it has been Christmas time once more. The time when some people forget what is safe and sensible diet and pack as many calories, carbs and assorted flavours of alcoholic beverages in their cakehole as they can.

To be fair, after the last couple of years, we certainly do deserve a pick me up of good tidings and joy. Just, please do not go over the top while you are making happy memories. Some do see it as a time to do good deeds. I hope we remember to turn a few lights off and try to save the planet. You remember the planet ? That thing that used to be green before we turned it into lots of sprawling concrete monsters, which gradually decay into homes of the forgotten. Ah yes.I see its coming back to you, the blue steaming orb, that's the one.

Regarding the wargaming hobby of ours, it seem like nearly every set of new games come with loads of new, expensive, starter set armies to collect, with reserves and squads of creatures waiting in the wings, ready to invade our tables, fuelling the rampant use of resins, lead or plastics yet again. How about digging out those figures at the back of the drawer that you thought cool enough to buy in the past.

Recycling is needed in every form of life, why should our hobby be any different? Scratch build some terrain out of scraps instead of that expensive terrain you had your eye on. If you don't want to paint them up and use them yourself, put them on E-bay, so that someone in our community can get some gaming miles out of them. The bonus is, you feel a sense of achievement, you can boost your funds to afford those new games a bit later on down the road. The Postie gets to keep his job too. Everybody wins.

A happy new year to one and all,

Ivor Cogdell

Microblogette - Updated

 "Happy New Year everyone",

A quick update on my upcoming Frostgrave battle report. I have relocated my gaming photos on my backup hard drive. I swopped them onto my main drive last weekend-ish, so I can lay my hands on them easily.  I have found a new virtual friend in the hobby, "Hi John N" and other friends have been in touch. A big wave to the Battle Circle wargaming group in Birmingham and players and DM's everywhere.

I was chatting to John about assorted games and war hammer came up, as it often does. There have been a few versions of 40K figures. I have some "Rogue Trooper" units and a few of the version 9 magazine figures, plague bearers etc. I prefer the early version Space Marine with the clean lines. Is version 9 your favourite sculpt or do you prefer earlier versions ?

Update 1 - I have found my warriors stats, you can find them in my next post - Frostgrave Warriors.

Update 2 -  I have posted my Frostgrave Battle Report Number 1 to the net.

Update 3 - I have just found all of the script for it and will edit them into the Battle report over the next few days. Currently it is in two parts (partly edited), but there will be three eventually.

Stay warm and safe folks,

Ivor Cogdell

Thoughts On - Dr. Who

 Hi Everybody,

For the first time in my tv viewing history (I'm 63), an episode of Dr. Who came on  Tv and I could not be bothered to watch it, or to be more accurate, I could not bear to watch it.(About 5 Nov 2021). Jodie is doing her thing, and the result is only partially her fault,(Writers and directors, I am looking at you too.) The rest of the cast I have no problem with and happily cheer them on. After following with growing gloom, the last but one series I could not watch as they mangled the once beloved travels of the Timelords.  I will put my hand up and admit, in this respect, I am old fashioned when it comes to Galifreyans. My favourite Doc was Jon Pertwee, closely followed by Tom Baker.

That was how matters stood for a couple of weeks, until, by chance, I saw the Dr. Who trailer with the "Angels" in it. I must admit, it did catch my interest. I thought, I will see what they are getting up to. On checking the listings, I noticed there was a few of the earlier episodes I had missed. I thought, in for a penny, in for a pound. I watched those first and was pleasantly surprised. Jodie was, well, Jodie, but by now I was used to her. To be fair, she seemed to be finding her feet and be more relaxed in the role. (Spoiler) The Master was back, making mischief once more. (Bonus). The storylines have thrown the spotlight on green issues. (Absolutely fantastic writers, gold star, well done, thought provoking. We have been warned. If you can't trust a Timelord to tell it like it is, Who will you trust???).

I have not delved into the "Angels" plot yet, but that should be rectified soon. I once more look forward to finding out about the other baddies the writers have in store for us, too. For the moment, I give them the benefit of the doubt. Time will tell if my faith in them was misplaced or not.

A question or two for you to ponder as you drop off to sleep tonight....

Did the Master really take on and beat Gallifrey on his own, as he claimed or is he just taking the credit for it, which is what I suspect?. Did he have a hand in it at all or did he have an ally, another rogue agent perhaps that has kept to the darker corners of the universe out of the Doctor's way and playing the Master for the "Fall Guy"?

When is good old Captain Jack going to put in another appearance ? Will he and Jodie become a love item ? Will we hear wedding bells anytime soon ? Will Jodie jilt him at the altar because she accidentally regenerates with excitement and turns back into a chap? (Hint to the writers - possibly into an Aussie? "G'Day to cobbers everywhere and everywhen.").

Do you think I am overreacting? Have you already turned off, like one of my friends ? Please leave a comment for or against "Time Ladies". Debate is good for our brains, so they say.

Stay warm and safe all,

Ivor Cogdell

P.S. Ginormous sigh of relief, the latest incarnation of The Doc has been announced, its a bloke. I dont know anything about him, but I wish him well in the role. Just for the record, I do wish Jodie well in her next role, too.

Thoughts On - Ups and Downs

 Hi All,

I'm sorry that the content on here has been a bit non existent lately. I hope the "Shout Outs" I mentioned in the blog from last time kept you going ok. My GM has been having Covid problems with his other half, so the RPG has stalled (I do have some more content for it though). I have been getting out a bit more, some socially distancing biking (Castle Bromwich Hall>Digby and Dog Pubs, Water Orton > Hare and Hounds Pub,  Minworth, >Fazely Canal > Tyburn Pub) and walking to the local parks, which is very good, but it eats into my PC time.

Speaking of  my PC time, I am now doing a home study course on Information Technology - that's Networking and stuff. (Part way through the second week of my course, I pranged my computer for a week (I was havingBoot Password problems and could not  get in) and was having to follow the class lessons through my Mobile, it was not ideal. I am still looking for a job.

I have been doing a few watercolour sketches of the Icelandic Volcano and some other stuff when I have been out and about, as you can see below.
Castle  Bromwich Hall grounds, just time for a picnic before the sun sets.

That is one frisky volcano. You can see live feeds on Youtube at the moment, *May 2021.

Another very nice picnic stopover spot. There is a pub the other side of the bridge too - A bonus, but I was driving, as it were.

I have had the second of my two Covid jabs, so that is very good to get out of the way. I was late to the local Doctor's surgery by 30 minutes. I called them to tell them of my error and they fitted me in, which was very good of them.
More on Jab-itis, which I mentioned in the last post, according to BBC radio 4 last night, a new poll stated that around 20% of youngsters (I'm not sure from where), do not want any of the Covid jabs available. The mind absolutely boggles. Very sadly, people are dying all over the world through this wretched virus and these young people are refusing the best chance they have of survival. Barmy.

"Whom the Gods wish to destroy, they first drive mad."— Leo Tolstoy

There you have it that's about four months or so of not doing a lot, encapsulated in a few pictures and watercolour sketches. The sun is out today and I feel a quick bike ride is in the offing. Stay safe all, but get out when you can.

Regards all,

Ivor Cogdell

Thoughts On - Post Xmas Blues Shout Out

 Hi all,

The January gloomies have struck. Christmas is over and there is nowhere to go, no sales to rummage through for bargains with friends and family. There is trouble at the UK ports (Brexit-itus), the Scottish National Party want to have another border with England and cast their lot in with the EEC again, I'm not sure how that would work out for tourism though if they went back to Euros.

There is still trouble in the States (Voting-itus), I hope everything calms down there. Not to mention Jab-itus. I do not understand why people are skeptical about well researched vaccines. Apparently, 40% of French folk do not want it. It's got to be better than the possible alternative, which is dying, right ? I am being good, going out for the occasional bout of "fresh air" walking around the streets of Brummagem and getting shopping done at the same time.

I have just finished a wargame, so that is going to be in production next. The photos will need cropping and text typed, as per usual.

A great big thanks to all the Vloggers on you tube that have kept me sane through this last year. Here are a few for you to try out if you don't know them.

Merry Christmas 2020

 Hi all,

A Merry Christmas 2020 to all of you blogsters and gamers out there. It's been a gloomy old year, but hopefully you have been able to get a game in here and there, do some model painting or find some interesting new rulesets out there to pass the time.

I have been in contact with my first GM, Richard and his brother, John and we have managed to get a RPG together to while away the time. I have posted the early episodes on here, so at least I have been able to generate some content for the blog, even though it was not exactly wargame stuff.

I have not been reading many blogs either, being honest, but watching terrain making stuff on YouTube. There are loads of great content out there, for whatever your theme may be. Take another look if you have a spare moment or three.

Take care all,

Ivor Cogdell

Thoughts On - His Dark Materials Episode 1 (No spoilers) - Updated.

 Greetings all,

I have just watched the first episode of the TV adaptation of  the children's / teen novel His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman. It started off very well. It has interesting characters right from the start. It is set on a world with a mix of technology and magic. It stars a young female lead with a hidden background, raised in protected surroundings.

There are tales of mysterious goings on with magic, naturally, that the elite do not want known. Nasties are following orders from their boss and doing not nice things, as they like doing, for as yet, unknown reasons. Good people are trying to come to their victim's aid. There are assorted people with obscure histories or conflicting motives. All good stuff to mix together in a story plot.

I like the costumes and locations shown so far. The use of animal "Familiars" is well done. The acting is splendid. If it continues in this way throughout the series it will make very good viewing. I am looking forward to the next episode. Generally a good sign of quality.

Review - 4 out of  5.

Ivor Cogdell

P.S. A question for you, no-one has reacted to this review, Has this series been aired on the tv or box sets before? Please comment below to put my mind at rest.

A Quickie

Another Quickie post for you

Hi all,
I hope you all enjoyed how it turned out at Durk's Compound, the 5150 scrap. The end was a pure improvisation bit. If you have not seen it, please have a look. I shall be finishing off my 5 Leagues from the Borderland episode soon. The Text and photos are done, just got to mash them together.
In a similar vein, I have upgraded to the second edition of 5 Parsecs From Home. I have not had chance to read it or do a print, but I am looking forward to new perils and dangers for the crew.

5 Parsecs from home 3rd Edition, 5 Leagues from the Borderland and many other great titles for the solo and cooperative players can be found at - https://www.thewargameswebsite.com/tag/nordic-weasel-games/

Thoughts on - Why is it so hard to leave comments ? Have you given up? (Updated 15 June 2020). Still need help.

Do you comment ? Or have you given up ?

Hi all,
The other day I was reading a post on the Gundabad Games blog, they had posted a review of "Five Klicks from the Zone - Chapter 1" by Nordic Weasel games. It was an interesting read and I wanted to leave a comment in appreciation.
I entered my comment, hit Publish, and it just vanished.  The setting label was on google admin, so I thought it should be ok. I had a look at the other settings and then tried to do it with my email in the URL. Nothing.

So if you are reading this please try to comment in the box below, mentioning what the settings were please. If you do manage it Great , thanks. BUT, if as I suspect, you fail, please email me at

ivorcogdell@hotmail.com - Subject: Blog comments

Thanks for reading this in any event. I will add your comments on the bottom here if you say so.

Update - just tried my own comment - Nothing on Google Administrator.setting.

8th June 2020 - No comments yet, you could be the first.

15th June 2020 - Thanks for the comment Shaun. I have just succeeded with my mobile too. I will try on here in a mo. Tried it. Still no luck using chrome or Brave, odd.

It shows "Google account", but not where to add my name, does it automatically know? I imagine so, but it does not show it.

I will try another reply at Gundobad Games on the net and then by phone. I succeeded in leaving a message on their post "5 Klicks from the Zone" on the phone, but still not by net.

Regards all,

Ivor Cogdell

Thoughts On -The new version of Blogger is creaky. Updated - 6 June 2020)

Hi everyone,
It looks nice, but it is bent, close to being busted. I could mot at one time upload photos to it, I get the error message "docs.googledocs.web" does not connect to your computer. I'm running windows 10 with Chrome. I have tried a different browser, brave, no luck. I have 12 gb of upload room for pictures, so it is not that.

I have looked on the forum, with no joy, it just keeps repeating itself with an answer and saying the post has been locked, as if that solves anything.

Just to point out, I have had absolutely NO problems with the original one, so they CAN get stuff right on the nail, they just have not tested the new one enough OR given us the tools to comment on it properly. I have checked on it and it is just about fixed.

Previous review score - 1 out of 10.

Ivor Cogdell.

Update 6/6/2020. - I can now get pictures onto the website, but it seems a slower procedure.

3 out of 10.

Round of applause - Updated.

A Great Round Of Applause

Hi all,
A big thanks and a great round of applause to all of you for getting me over the 8,000 viewing count mark and of course, as usual, everybody helping in the fight against Corona Virus.

I have been doing a bit more painting today of the Crab Man from the previous blog entry "Getting Wet" and I have put them on here for you in the next posting - Crab Man. I have also cut to size and fitted a replacement shelf in my reclaimed shelf unit in my game room, with that and a cupboard, I can have a swop around now.
A quick shout to all of the wargamers on you tube helping to promote the hobby. A big well done to all of you new bloggers out there, keep on going now you have started.

Getting wet

Or Rather Getting Brushes wet

Hi all,
Just to show that not every second of my time has been sent in the garden lately, it certainly seems like it though. Here are a few painted bits of minis. Some of them are nasty looking critters too. By the (C) Copyright date on the sprue,  I have had them for a while, so it was about time they saw some action, as it were.

Ready for snipping.

First wash.

Terracotta first coat.

First coat of thin brown wash.

Light highlights added.

A fire ready to be lit.

Close up on Alien. For the next stage of painting this mini, see "Crab Man" post 24th May 2020.

All models are in the early stages, feel free to add any comments or tips below.

Regards all,

Ivor Cogdell
