W3 - Road Attack Rules tryout - Updated

Hi all,
This is just a quick tryout of the Wastelands 3 Vehicle attack rules, with a couple of my house rules thrown in for good measure. My apologies, but a bit of imagination is needed, there is no actual "tail gunner" or shield on the back of the truck - I did not have any 15 mm characters to use or the passenger firing out of the car, plus it has a windshield, it is not exactly a Mad Max quality setting like the great layout that was at Salute 2016.

House Rule - Obstruction ahead - Roll a d20 each turn.

1-3 = Off road to Left,
or central reservation for highways.
9 = Left highway,
10 = Middle highway,
11 = Right highway,
18-20 = Off road to right.
(Amend number of lanes
 to suit your layout).

House Rule - Visibility - Roll for a visibility change every three turns.

2 x d6 *10 feet =  This is the distance from the front of the leading truck/car to where
the object/car/ truck appears out of the mist and put on the table.

Note: Different vehicles may be in different thicknesses of visibility as the winds blow about them and change the view. Possibly, you could have a roadside marker
for the smog distance as it alters for the vehicles at that point.

Optional - Roll for weaponry available.

------------------

Status

The truck, driven by Sandy, is towing a flatbed with shielding on the back end
(giving a -2 to hit roll), with a civilian  "Tail Gunner", Raven using a bow and arrow.
Optional - roll a 2 x d20 for the number of his arrows left.
Optional - roll a d4-1 for the number of  Molotov Cocktails he has made up.

The car, driven by Whizz, has a militia passenger, Beaky, who is armed with a pistol.
Optional - roll a d6 for the number of bullets he has left.

Roll a 1 on a d4 for a windshield fitted on the car (this gives -1 to hit roll
 against arrows, but not bullets).

Note: An arrow fired from a modern sports bow can penetrate a car windscreen,
but most of its force would be spent on impact, so I estimate no damage done to the target.

If there is no windshield in the vehicle, then the driver could also be a target, not just the passenger. Both of them are classed as being in light cover. (-1 to hit roll). State who
you are aiming at before shooting.
Optional - Not used here, roll on the loss of control table instead of the "to hit" table.

Starting Positions
Turn 1

Visibility = 90'
 Obstruction Roll =14 - None.

The truck's speed is 5, in the right-hand lane.

The car's speed is 5.
Position =  5' behind the truck.
 It has no windshield.

Initiative - Roll a d20 = The car wins 15 to 8.

The car spends its action point. -
Whizz plans to drift to the left and accelerate.

Sandy, in the truck, plans no action during this turn.

Move - The car drifts left and accelerates to 7, beginning to
overtake the truck, which remains at the same speed of 5.

The car's militia passenger, Beaky, shoots
at Raven on the flatbed, 2 and misses.

The "tail gunner", Raven returns fire at
Beaky - 2 missings also.

Turn 2

Obstruction Roll =18 - Off road to the right.

The truck's speed is 5 in the right lane.
The car's speed is 7 in the left-hand lane.

The car spends its action point. -
Whizz plans to decelerate.

Sandy, plans no action this turn.

Move the car forward relative to
 the truck-Whizz decelerates by
1 to 6, to give Beaky a smoother
 ride and help him aim.

The car passenger, Beaky, shoots
at Raven on the flatbed, 2 and misses.

The "tail gunner", Raven, returns
fire - 4, the arrow misses.

Obstruction appears, top left
Turn 3

Roll for visibility - 5 + 4 * 10 = 90',
it remains fairly good.

Obstruction Roll =19

A warning post looms out of the  mist, off-road to the left, 90' in
front of the truck's front bumper.

The truck speed is 5.
Its position = Right Lane.

The car speed is 6.
Position = Left Lane, 3 foot forward
 of the truck's rear bumper.

The car spends its action point. -
Whizz plans to sideswipe the truck

Sandy, in the truck, plans no action.

Move car  -Whizz sideswipes the truck.

Car Attack roll = 26.

Truck defending roll = 33.

So, the car takes a whopping 33 points
of damage, leaving only 2 points left.
And

Around
Critical Damage has been done, so roll on the Control Loss table = 8.

The result is that it bounces off the truck and spins off the road 360
degrees and comes to a complete halt, just in front of a warning post
regarding a large mast that had been knocked over in the past.

They
Sandy, in the truck, feels a slight wobble at the back, he checks
the rear mirror and grins as he sees the car spinning wildly off
 the road.
Go

 SKREEE...

The car finally skids to a halt in a cloud of dust and sand.
Beaky is dizzy after the spin, so holds fire.

Raven takes the opportunity to
shoot at Whizz as he comes into
view - 4, it misses.

Turn 4

Obstruction Roll  = 7 - Nil.

The truck speed is 5.
Its position = Right Lane.

The car speed is zero, stationary.
Position = Off the highway to the left.

The car spends its action point. -
Whizz has no option but to reverse.

Sandy takes no action this turn.

Move  - The car reverses by 5 back
almost onto the road and the truck gains some much-needed ground.

Both passengers hold fire.

Whizz has lost sight of the truck in the thickening mist.

Turn 5

Obstruction Roll  = 7 - Nil.

The truck speed is 5.
Its position = Right Lane.

The car speed is 5 Reversing.
Position = Off the highway to the left.

The car spends its action point. -
Whizz slows to a stop

Move the truck forward and the car is stationary, but at least back
 onto the road.

Sandy, in the truck, takes no action
 this turn.

Turn 6

The visibility drops to 40' for Sandy, but
is still at 90' for Whizz.

Obstruction Roll =19 - A boulder appears
out of the mist, off-road to the right.

The truck speed is 5, in the right lane.
The car speed is 0 stationary.
Position = In the left lane.

The car spends its action point. -
Whizz plans to accelerate.

Sandy, in the truck, plans to decelerate,
because the mist is getting thicker for him.

Move - Whizz floors the accelerator and with a screech of
tires, he darts away again and accelerates to 5, eager to catch his prey.

Sandy drops a gear and goes down to 3.

Turn 7

Obstruction Roll =10

A boulder is in the left lane. (There
 must have been an avalanche.)

The truck's speed is 3.

The car speed is 5.

The car spends its action point. -
Whizz plans to accelerate.

Sandy takes no action this turn.

Move - Whizz accelerates to 8,
eager to catch his prey. Sandy remains calm and steady at 3.

Turn 8

The visibility remains at 40' for Sandy, but
drops to 70' for Whizz. He still cannot see
 the truck yet.

Obstruction Roll = 8 - nothing.

The truck's speed is 3.
Its position = Right Lane.

The car's speed is 8.
Position = In the left lane.

The car spends its action point. -
Whizz plans to accelerate again
as the truck seems to have
 eluded him.

(Note: I did a random roll here
to fairly decide the car's action

1-2 Slow,
3-4 Same pace,
5-6 Accelerate.

The roll was 5.)

Sandy takes no action this turn.

Move - Whizz accelerates to 9, eager to catch his prey. Sandy remains
 calm and steady at 3.

Turn 9

The visibility lifts slightly to 50' for
Sandy, but drops to 40' for Whizz.

The back of the truck has suddenly
popped out the back of the mist and he yells in glee.

Obstruction Roll =19 - Off road to the right.

The truck speed is 3.
Its position = Right Lane.

The car speed is 9. Position = In the left lane.

The car spends its action point. -Whizz plans to decelerate.
Sandy, takes no action this turn.

Move car -Whizz decelerates by
(random roll) 4  to 5. Sandy remains calm and steady at 3.

Raven was surprised as well when the car appeared out of the mist beside them, Beaky got off a lucky shot (6) and hit him, which proved fatal (3).
Raven lies slumped over the shield, his bow at his side. Beaky gives
a roar of triumph.

Turn 10

Obstruction Roll = 5 - nothing.

The truck speed is 3.
 Its position = Right Lane.

The car speed is 5.
Position = In the left lane.

The car spends its action point. -
Whizz plans to accelerate by 1.
Sandy, takes no action this turn.

Beaky's a roar of triumph came just at the wrong moment as it
distracted Wizz and he hit the accelerator harder than he had
 planned.

Move car -Whizz accelerates by 2  to 7, that's when they smacked into the large
boulder, for a combined impact of 10.
(Roll for damage 6 = -4 Body points = BOOM). The car disintegrates in a fireball.
CRUNCHH.

Sandy looks through the rearview mirror and gives a long "TOOOT  TOOOT" on his horn, expecting Raven to get up and respond too and he is shocked when he does not and realizes why. Life is hard in the wastelands.

There you have it, Furiosa or Mad Max compatible action scenes, easily able to generate your own factions for some sandy action. I hope you like it, please comment below.

Notes: I'm just deciding on the layout of the station. I will probably use D and D maps to portray the site, rather than in a 3d model, as it is multi level.

Just to prove that research pays dividends, I have just checked, there is actually a Warren Station (my original name for this station) on the London Underground, so I have changed the name to Star Subway Station.

W3 - Some goodies for my Wasteland

Hi all,
I have just got some transport items for my wilderness setting.

The Target- A nice juicy helicopter
It will need a bit of customizing though, the trailer is much too open.

Here are the baddies.

More baddies courtesy  of  "Hot Wheels". (C)2015 Mattel. All rights reserved. (R) (TM).

Cruise Bruiser.
I was just trying to write the code to generate the scenery positions, possibly other stuff too. I tried using python, it was too fiddly, I went back to Microsoft Small Basic, but I can't find the random function. I will probably resort to tape measuring and random dice rolls.
Hmm, does w3 include how much ammo for each person ? Accuracy of shooting while driving and shooting at the same time ? No.
I'm just pondering adding a bit of "Necromunda" - Ash Wastes" to the mix to give the action a bit more spice.

Wastelands = Necromunda, Ash Wastes conversion.

1 resource = 10 Cash.

My W3 Vehicle Rules tryout has now been posted.

W3 - A battle for the Leadership of the Mutants

The battle
It is the best of five hits with a quarterstaff who wins and goes through to fight the other winner. The highest roll of a d6 wins the round. A draw results in a "parry". A blow to the head results in a -1 "stunned" penalty in the next round.  A 12 sided "Body Dice" was used to give the hit locations.

Feathers V. Bowman
1                   2        First score to Bowman, a hit on Feather's right hand.
5                   4        Feathers retaliates with a hit on Bowman's left arm.
6                   2        Followed by a hit on Bowman's right foot.
6                   6        Feathers goes for a body hit, but Bowman blocks it.
1                   2        Bowman stays in the fight with a hit to Feather's right arm.
2                   4        Bowman wins the fight with a hit to Feather's left hand.

   Stag  V. Axeman
4               6              Axeman scores a hit on Stag's right leg.
2               5              Followed by a hit on Stag's right hand.
4               4              Axeman goes for victory, aiming at Stag's left hand, but it was
                                      parried.
5               4              Stag strikes Axeman in the body.
5               5              Axeman goes for a quick strike at Stag's left foot, but he dodges
                                      out of the way.
4               5              But while Stag is off balance, Axeman switches his attack to his
right heel, he positions the quarterstaff behind Stag's foot, with a
pivoting move to his left, he sweeps stag completely off his feet
and leaves him in a crumpled heap on the floor.

Bowman  V.  Axeman
6                    2          Bowman delivers a vicious hit to Axeman's head. He is stunned
and at a -1 penalty going into the next round.
3            2-1=1          Bowman whacks Axeman in the stomach.
5                    3         Then Bowman wins the fight convincingly with a sideways swipe
                                        at Axeman's left arm.

Bowman is now the leader of the gang, with Axeman in the second spot.

W3 - Background Story

No one, but a small inner faction of an unknown government, knew who wrote and planted the "Black Eater" sleeper computer virus into the computer networks around the world. At first, it just lay dormant, spreading itself across the net and into storage backups, just notifying a particular web address that another node was affected.
When it finally reached critical mass and was activated, it crashed the global banks and that, in turn, crashed the economy of the world. Of course, each government blamed their most hated foe for the deed. Once the banks had been done away with, the riots began. Here and there at first. They just kept growing larger and larger, the destruction got more widespread.
The cities were not safe anymore. It soon spread to the outlying areas, as the law broke down under the pressure. The military were called out, but they were too little, too late, spread too thinly. Little pockets of stability here and there survived intact, if they were isolated enough and self sufficient, but it was just delaying the inevitable.
Luckily, the nuclear bombs did not fly, as many warmongers had predicted in the past. There was no one to aim at who were not suffering as you were suffering. The command structure fell apart as communications were disrupted and then failed altogether.
Some say that if that had been all of our troubles it would have been enough to end our civilization, but when Maxwell's Comet hit Siberia, it shifted the polar axis and released massive amounts of pollutants into the atmosphere.
The weather went crazy after that. When Mother Nature turned her back on us, then our civilization was doomed. The sea level rose and flooded low level areas, hurricanes ravaged the land, desert areas grew in size, in many cases finishing off what the rioters had started. The rotting bones of our civilization lay everywhere.
Gang battled gang, fighting over what was left of any use to them, The population of the planet plummeted, as the innocents were caught as targets or just in the crossfire of conflicts between opponents. Survivalist skills became valued, alas, too many did not have them when it mattered,

(To be continued).

P.S. This is my made up background, not from the Wastelands 3 rules.

Pause 4

Hi all,

I've been painting up my wasteland Heroes, my first two pictures of my work in progress are on the blog, I have made the picture larger for you, I had updated their stats, since they have no guns. I tried to prime my next set of scenery, but my spray nozzle was faulty.  I have given it a lick over with Acrylic, but with no real success. Will have another go at it when time permits.

I am making up some paper crates for scenery and cover for 5 Parsecs. The first one has been completed. I'm not going to bother with a photo, when you've seen one crate, you've seen them all. Downloaded a few more to keep the variety up.

Just been painting some of my 5 Parsec heroes too. The pictures are in the 5 Parsec characters entry - 27th August 2015. Its all gradually coming together.

I have added to the W3 background post of how the wastelands began - in my universe anyway.

I had printed out a truck for 5 Parsec, but the size was too small for my minis.  I had been looking on the net for other paper vehicles and there are lots of sites out there to check, often the scale is not right. But it is interesting seeing what is out there. Any 28 mm vehicle suggestions ? Put them in the comments, please.

I have found a suitable vehicle, but don't let that stop you from making suggestions though.

Slow down on here due to reading Larry Niven / The Smoke Ring. Just been looking at some other blogs, just to see what some other folks are up to out there in wargaming land. Bit of scratch build dioramas, plenty of painting, a few battle reports. Keep it up, guys and gals.

The first three pages are now assembled, the fourth to 6th pages are printed. One good thing has come out of this process, the notion "Don't start an episode until you can complete it in fairly short order." has been grasped. Ok, ok, it is fairly obvious in hindsight, but I am new to this game. That's what the comments sections are for, to point out the obvious to us new bods on the block, or what we might like to try out hand to next.

I've added another picture of my watchtower build and some extra dialogue to Droid Job pt2, since part three was taking so long to appear. Its coming along slowly, like everything else on here.

Ivor

W3 - Heroes 2

Here are my heroes so far.

Not exactly Constable, but coming on. I will post more pictures as I progress.

Slightly too close, never mind. I had to redo their stats in light of them only carrying a pistol and a night stick. (Not sure on designation yet, have to check the rules).

P.S. No, the one on the right is not pretending to be an Elk,

Battle Reports

Hi all,
I have just completed my battle report for Army Camp Livingstone, using the KR 16 rules from Angel Barracks, which I hinted at in an early blog, my notes were missing, so I decided to do the battle description from memory. One or two of the details may not be in the right order, but you should be able to follow the action.
Posted next was the Leadership battle for the Mutant tribe in the Wastelands.

          Completed - 5 p Job 1 - Droids parts 1 - 3.

Just added, Testing the road rage rules, Wastelands 3 style.

Enjoy,

Terrain - Building 4Ground Corner Ruins Type 3 Plus D.I.Y Additions Part 3

Hi all,
This is my next stage photos of my d.i.y. section of the ruins.

"My knife must be here somewhere."
There are still bits of final decoration to add.

Added more wall, texture, and floorboards.
Some of the floorboards were supplied, (I did not use them all here, I saved some for later use on other projects), others were made from more lolly sticks. The texture is made from brown umber paint and sand.

I think that will do.

"Anybody home ?"

With better lighting
More defences were added (mainly against nasties) from floorboards.

The spike section, lower right, is removable for entrance / exit. 2 spikes then remain.

Diagonal spar now removed.

Can you see the broken glass in the window?

With added walkway
Some of the defences still need painting, but I thought it was about time I posted again with something new and this was all I had.

I'm pleased with the results. Are you going to buy one now and see what extras you can add to it?

Thanks to 4Ground for putting in the effort and making great products.

P.S. It has now taken residence in Mordheim, along with other goodies. See The Journey and WHF - Arrival at Mordheim.

Pause 3

Hi all,
You will be pleased to know that I have finally got around to purchasing some more models  for the Blog. em4 and Crooked Dice Games came up with the goods for me. Thanks to Colin on the Nordic Weasel Yahoo Group Forum for pointing me in the right direction with some handy suggestions.

As someone almost once said, "Mr.Scott, ready to beam down goodies."

"Aye, Sir. Energizing now."

The postie has arrived, unfortunately, so has the Xmas move around at my shop. this means I will not have much free time to do my other stuff for a bit. I'm also mid decorating, but I may do a bit of priming during a break.

Just added a few names to the Hugemont cast list.

I do want to be generating more posts than I am at the moment, but real life keeps butting its nose into everything. Just had to buy a new Digital aerial, I have fitted it and it works ok, I have just got to get some more co-ax cable to reach the tv downstairs.

Just painted the missing bits on the model. Pictures posted

Next day, loose keys - so have to change lock barrel on front door after I get home (had a spare key to get in with), check for cable extenders while shopping, all gone.

Frustrated, yet again.

I have finished off my Corner ruin, unless I find other bits to add to it.

Thanks to the person who bothered to vote in my poll, which is situated right at the bottom of the blog, on the left. I will try a different question and see what results I get this time. Maybe a different place would be better, if you think so, leave a comment here.

Another shout out and thanks everybody who has taken the time to have a look at my site, I have now topped the thousand mark. Please feel free to comment on anything I have done or suggestions.
I am wondering, what is the difference between a follower and someone who has me in their circle ? Google plus is in a world of its own.

Terrain - Building 4Ground Corner Ruins Type 3 plus D.I.Y. Additions part 2 of 3.

Hi all,
This is part two of my 4Ground "Corner Ruin Type 3" build, with additions made with foam core and recycled bits of lolly sticks. Originally posted in one part, it was getting too long, so I decided to put it into three parts.
The wooden floorboards on the upper layer have been glued in. They were carved so that they would rest on the walls to give extra support, not just having the line of glue along the floorboard edge. There is mock brickwork added, to the right of the soldier.

The things you can do with lolly sticks. (Still to be weathered).

"Looking for tracks."

The back of the house, showing weathering details.

This project is continued in Part Three.

Part One.

Terrain - Building 4Ground Corner Ruins Type 3 plus D.I.Y. Additions part 1 of 3.

Hi all,
This was meant to be just a short, quick post for the Wastelander's out there. You are not forgotten. It did run away with me a bit. On the 25th September, I built the 28 mm scale pre-decorated "Corner Ruins Type 3" from 4Ground. It is mainly aimed at 19th century to WW II scenery, but it will do for the "Post Apocalypse" setting with no problems, even fantasy with some extra props.
Please note - their difficulty rating is - 14 and older. PVA wood glue is recommended. There are simple easy instructions or photographs, apart from the door. The door in the diagram is painted dark green and it is hard to make out the details.
Item V (a choice of two colours) is the handle and goes sideways into the door slot, item W goes on the inside of the door, fairly low down. I added a piece of sellotape along the inside of the door to give a working hinge.

What you get

This is almost the complete official assembly, minus the ladder, window. door and the brick and floorboard rubble supplied. I was enjoying myself so much, that it inspired me to put a base on it and get out some foam board and continue to add to the model. With a bit of recycling of lolly sticks and cutting, I am now at this stage.

I have some more work to do on it, painting the white walls brick red to roughly match the original, putting down more floorboards and adding the details provided by 4Ground, (spare bricks, wood, ladders and tiles).

He is one of my partially painted Heroes of the Wastelands.

I've weather worn the back section to blend better, not sure what details I shall add. The floorboards need adjusting, perhaps more weathering.

Continued in Part Two  and Part Three.

Regards all,

Ivor Cogdell
