Thoughts On - Dr. Who - Updated 15 June 2026

 Hi Everybody,

For the first time in my TV viewing history (I'm 63), an episode of Dr Who came on  TV and I could not be bothered to watch it, or to be more accurate, I could not bear to watch it. (About 5 Nov 2021). Jodie is doing her thing, and the result is only partially her fault (Writers and directors, I am looking at you, too.) The rest of the cast, I have no problem with and happily cheer them on. After following with growing gloom, the last but one series I could not watch as they mangled the once beloved travels of the Time Lords.  I will put my hand up and admit, in this respect, I am old-fashioned when it comes to Galifreyans. My favourite Doc was Jon Pertwee, closely followed by Tom Baker.

That was how matters stood for a couple of weeks, until, by chance, I saw the Dr Who trailer with the "Angels" in it. I must admit, it did catch my interest. I thought I would see what they are getting up to. On checking the listings, I noticed there were a few of the earlier episodes I had missed. I thought, in for a penny, in for a pound. I watched those first and was pleasantly surprised. Jodie was, well, Jodie, but by now I was used to her. To be fair, she seemed to be finding her feet and was more relaxed in the role. (Spoiler) The Master was back, making mischief once more. (Bonus). The storylines have thrown the spotlight on green issues. (Absolutely fantastic writers, gold star, well done, thought-provoking. We have been warned. If you can't trust a Timelord to tell it like it is, who will you trust???).

I have not delved into the "Angels" plot yet, but that should be rectified soon. I once more look forward to finding out about the other baddies the writers have in store for us, too. For the moment, I give them the benefit of the doubt. Time will tell if my faith in them was misplaced or not.

A question or two for you to ponder as you drop off to sleep tonight....

Did the Master really take on and beat Gallifrey on his own, as he claimed or is he just taking the credit for it, which is what I suspect?. Did he have a hand in it at all, or did he have an ally, another rogue agent perhaps, that has kept to the darker corners of the universe out of the Doctor's way and playing the Master for the "Fall Guy"?

When is good old Captain Jack going to put in another appearance? Will he and Jodie become a love item? Will we hear wedding bells anytime soon? Will Jodie jilt him at the altar because she accidentally regenerates with excitement and turns back into a chap? (Hint to the writers - possibly into an Aussie? "G'Day to cobbers everywhere and everywhen.").

Do you think I am overreacting? Have you already turned off, like one of my friends? Please leave a comment for or against "Time Ladies". Debate is good for our brains, so they say.

Stay warm and safe, all,

Ivor Cogdell

P.S. Ginormous sigh of relief, the latest incarnation of The Doc has been announced, it's a bloke. I don't know anything about him, but I wish him well in the role. Just for the record, I do wish Jodie well in her next role, too.

P.P.S. Boy, was that PS so premature. The show, script and acting in the last series were AWFUL, possibly thanks to the input by DISNEY. They have since walked away from the project. The 2026 Christmas special has been pushed back to at least Easter, because NOBODY wants to be the next doctor after that rubbish. This was the BBC's flagship show, but now they could not find a leading actor. The BBC are still looking around for an international partner to help fund it too.

15 June 2026 - More utterly shoddy treatment of the fans, by amazon this time - cancelling the Stargate SG1 Renewal series because the fans would like it too much and nobody else would.

See my post about that - #SaveStargate.

  1. Hello Ivor,

Had to respond as I agree and my friends and I were talking about exactly this only a few days ago. The writing has really let down the last few Doctors. I also hark back to the older stories that were not always galaxy spanning. The best episodes from the older and newer Doctors I feel were the the ones that were focused on an event or person, rather than saving the universe. I have not seen the latest series that has come out in the last few weeks but have heard is is not bad so will be watching it over the net few weeks.

  2. Hi Shaun, sorry it took me so long to spot your messages, I've been watching the last series, it's been a bit of a roller coaster series. They sure don't give fans much confidence in what's ahead. Did you get to follow the series?

    1. I have seen the latest 6 part series. Oh dear, saving the universe not just the galaxy. And a new origin story. While I did like how they interrelated the 6 different parts into an overall story I have a feeling I will watch just the New Year's special (haven't seen it yet) and finally give up on Dr Who. The acting is fine, just the plots are so OTT.

  3. Did not know about the new years special, will have to track that one down. You could always wait for the next regeneration and see what you make of that, since I think it is going to be a new team involved. Don't know who (pardon the pun). Ivor

  4. Yes, maybe I will wait for the next writing team with the new Doctor. After watching for such a very long time, I am Linley to be unable to resist watching a new Doctor!

  6. I have not seen a timetable for the new series, or seen any Dr. Who magazine covers, for that matter. I think it is usually around October time? Thanks for posting.
